Crossing into Spain
San Sebastian's restaurants are the most requested evening outing from Biarritz. France and Spain are both in the Schengen area, so there is normally no routine passport control at the Hendaye and Irun crossing, but carry your passport or ID card because spot checks do happen. The A63 in France and the AP-8 in Spain are both tolled motorways. EES and ETIAS for arrivals at BIQ
The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully running at Schengen external borders since 10 April 2026. Non-EU visitors on short stays have their passport scanned, a facial image taken and, for most, fingerprints recorded at the first entry, which can add time at the booth; that is one reason international arrivals carry 60 minutes of waiting. ETIAS, the travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, is not yet in operation, and the EU has said it will announce a start date months in advance. Summer traffic builds on the coast road to Anglet and at the A63 junctions at Biarritz and Bayonne, especially on Saturdays.
