Nice has by far the most flights and two terminals, T1 and T2. The route runs west on the A8 toll motorway to the Le Muy exit, then down through the hills to Sainte-Maxime and around the gulf. Summer traffic on the peninsula
From late June to early September, the road into Saint-Tropez is the single biggest factor in your journey. Almost all traffic funnels through the La Foux junction at the head of the gulf, where roads from Sainte-Maxime, Grimaud and Cogolin meet the D98A into town. On a July or August Saturday, when villa rentals change over, the last 10 km can take an hour. The Pampelonne beach road in Ramatuelle clogs around lunchtime and again in the early evening as the beach clubs empty.
What works in practice:
- Time flights to avoid the Saturday crush. A landing in Nice before 10 am or after 7 pm often halves the final stretch.
- Build a buffer for departures. For a midday flight from Nice in August, leave Saint-Tropez at least three hours before departure.
- Use the sea for the last leg when it makes sense. Passenger boats cross the gulf from Sainte-Maxime and Port Grimaud to the old port in season, and some guests are dropped at the quay across the water to avoid the junction.
- Book hourly for beach and dinner days. With chauffeur hire, the car stays with you between a villa, a Pampelonne beach club and a table in town, instead of hunting for a car in the evening rush.
Town-centre parking is scarce and some streets around the port are closed to general traffic in summer, so the chauffeur may drop you at the edge of the pedestrian zone. The Place des Lices market, on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, closes the square to cars.

Villages, beaches and hotels
Saint-Tropez itself is small: the port, the old fishing quarter of La Ponche, the Citadelle on the hill and the Place des Lices. Most of the gulf's villas and hotels lie outside the town. Ramatuelle holds the 5 km sweep of Pampelonne beach and its beach clubs, plus hotels such as La Reserve Ramatuelle. Gassin, a hill village, overlooks the polo grounds and vineyards. Grimaud, Cogolin, Port Grimaud and Sainte-Maxime ring the gulf, and La Croix-Valmer sits on the western approach from Toulon.

- 16 to 18 May: Les Bravades, the town's historic festival with musket salutes and processions, which closes central streets.
- June: the Giraglia offshore race and the start of beach club season.
- July and August: peak season, the polo tournaments at Gassin and the Ramatuelle theatre festival, usually in early August.
- Late September into early October: Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, when classic and modern yachts race in the gulf and the port is full.

Trains and intercity routes on the Riviera
The nearest TGV stations are Saint-Raphael-Valescure, about 40 km and 50 to 75 minutes away, and Les Arcs-Draguignan, about 45 km inland. Both have trains from Paris and Marseille, and a car from the station avoids the gulf's bus connections. For longer trips, book intercity transfers:

Driving realities in the Var
Traffic drives on the right. The A8 and A57 motorways are toll roads, paid at barriers or by electronic tag. Off the motorway, the roads into the peninsula are two-lane routes through forests and vineyards, with speed cameras and summer checkpoints. Wildfire risk leads the authorities to close some forest roads and massif access on high-risk days in summer, and your chauffeur follows those closures.
Day trips from Saint-Tropez
Many guests use a chauffeur for a day inland rather than a single transfer. Popular routes include the perched villages of Gassin and Ramatuelle at sunset, the wine estates of the Cotes de Provence appellation around La Croix-Valmer, Grimaud and Pierrefeu, the Gorges du Verdon about two hours north, and lunch in Bormes-les-Mimosas or on the Iles d'Hyeres ferry quay at La Tour Fondue. Arrival formalities in France
France is in the EU and Schengen area. Passengers flying into Nice from outside Schengen, for example from London, New York or Dubai, pass border control at the airport, and since 10 April 2026 non-EU travellers register under the Entry/Exit System (EES) on their first Schengen entry, which can mean longer queues at peak times. The EU's ETIAS authorisation is still pending and has no announced start. Arrivals on flights from within Schengen have no passport check. Private flights from outside Schengen clear border formalities at an airport with border control, so check with your operator how your routing works for La Mole.
