Geneva Airport pickup: Swiss side or French sector
Geneva Airport sits on the Swiss-French border and has two exits. Most passengers leave through the Swiss side, where standard pickup is curbside at the airport's pre-arranged pickup area outside arrivals; the chauffeur messages the exact spot after landing. The airport also has a French sector, reached airside from some gates, which lets travellers step straight into France. Tell us which exit you plan to use when you book. Flights are tracked. Waiting included is 60 minutes from actual landing on international arrivals, 30 minutes on flights within the Schengen area that count as domestic for the airline, and 15 minutes on other pickups; after that, 15-minute blocks apply. Baggage belts for ski bags and oversize items are slower on winter Saturdays, which is why the clock starts at actual landing.
The drive: route, border and timing
From the airport the car crosses into France within minutes and joins the A40, the Autoroute Blanche, through the Arve valley past Cluses and Sallanches, then climbs the final stretch to the Chamonix valley. The Swiss section is short but uses the national motorway, which requires a Swiss vignette on the vehicle.

On winter Saturdays, when chalets change over, traffic backs up on the A40 near Cluses and on the valley road, and a transfer can take two hours or more. The fixed fare does not change.
Winter tyres, chains and the Loi Montagne
The whole of Haute-Savoie falls under the Loi Montagne II rules. From 1 November to 31 March, vehicles must either fit winter tyres marked with the 3PMSF snowflake symbol or carry snow chains or textile snow socks for at least two drive wheels. The penalty for non-compliance is a fourth-class fine of 135 euros, and police can stop a vehicle from continuing. On days when the round blue B26 sign shows "chaines obligatoires", chains must be fitted even with winter tyres. These are rules about the road, published by French road safety; the affiliate's vehicles for valley work are prepared for them, and the chauffeur decides when to fit chains on the climb to a high chalet.
Chamonix, Argentiere and Les Houches: where to be dropped
The town centre around the Place Balmat and the Rue du Docteur Paccard is largely pedestrian, so hotel drops use the nearest legal set-down point. Chamonix Sud holds many apartments and is close to the Aiguille du Midi cable car. Les Praz and Argentiere lead to the Flegere and Grands Montets lifts, and Les Houches at the valley entrance is home to the Kandahar World Cup downhill course. Chalets on the slopes above the Route des Pelerins or at Les Bossons often have steep, narrow drives; share the access notes when you book so the right vehicle is sent.
Aiguille du Midi, Montenvers and valley days
Chamonix is a strong base for day trips. Popular runs include Courmayeur in Italy through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Annecy and its lake (about 1 hour 15 minutes), Zermatt by car and train, and Geneva for shopping or a lakeside dinner. Events calendar in the valley
- Kandahar World Cup races at Les Houches, usually late January or February.
- UTMB Mont-Blanc trail races, usually in late August, the busiest week of the summer.
- Winter season from mid-December to April, with Christmas, February school holidays and Easter as peak weeks.

Vehicles for skis and groups
An executive SUV is the usual choice for two to four skiers, with room for ski bags and boot bags. A Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van carries larger chalet groups and their equipment. A Standard Sedan works for light-luggage summer visitors. The affiliate standard caps vehicle age at four model years, stretched to seven only for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley. Border and entry notes
Geneva is in Switzerland and Chamonix in France, but both countries belong to the Schengen area, so there is no routine passport check on the road. Non-EU travellers entering Schengen at Geneva now register under the EU Entry/Exit System, which has been fully operational since April 2026, with fingerprints and a facial image at first entry. ETIAS pre-travel authorisation has not started as of September 2026; the EU will publish its launch date in advance on its travel portal. Customs checks on goods can still happen at the border posts.
