From Zurich, the Lötschberg car train is the usual route: cars drive onto a rail wagon at Kandersteg and ride about 15 minutes through the tunnel. The all-road alternative via Lausanne adds roughly an hour. The Simplon Pass from Italy is kept open through winter but can close for hours in heavy snow, and the chauffeur will reroute if needed. Swiss trains reach Visp from Geneva, Bern and Zurich, and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn continues from Visp to Zermatt in about an hour. The Glacier Express links Zermatt with St. Moritz in roughly eight hours. A common combination: the Glacier Express east, then a chauffeur from St. Moritz back to Zurich Airport.
Planning the arrival day
A long-haul flight into Geneva that lands at 8:00 usually puts you in Zermatt by early afternoon: about an hour through passport control and baggage, roughly three hours on the road, then the shuttle train. Two things decide whether the day runs smoothly. First, hotel check-in times; many Zermatt hotels will store bags if you arrive before your room is ready, so you can go straight up the mountain. Second, the last trains of the evening.
