Zurich Airport to Lucerne
Lucerne has no airline airport; Zurich Airport is the gateway, about 65 km away. The drive on the A4 and A14 through the Knonauer Amt usually takes 50 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes, more in the Zurich rush hour. Standard pickup is at the airport's designated pre-arranged pickup area, and the chauffeur texts the exact location on landing. A meet and greet in the arrivals hall with a name board is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations. Business jets use the Zurich FBOs; Buochs airfield near the lake also takes some business aviation.

A day on the lake and in the mountains
Lucerne's biggest draw is the ring of peaks and the lake around it. A chauffeur is useful because the classic excursions start and finish in different places. Typical plans:
- Pilatus Golden Round Trip: boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, the world's steepest cogwheel railway to the summit, then aerial cableway and gondola down to Kriens. The chauffeur can meet you at Kriens, or drive you to Alpnachstad if you skip the boat. The cogwheel railway runs roughly from May to November; the cableway side runs most of the year.
- Rigi, the Queen of the Mountains: cogwheel trains climb from Vitznau and from Arth-Goldau, and a cable car runs from Weggis. The car drops you at one valley station and collects you at another.
- Titlis: drive about 35 km to Engelberg, then the Rotair revolving gondola to the glacier, with year-round snow at about 3,000 m.
- Bürgenstock: the resort on a ridge above the lake, about 20 km by road, or reachable by boat and funicular.
- Stanserhorn: the historic funicular and open-top CabriO cable car from Stans.

The city: old town, lakefront and KKL
The Chapel Bridge and its water tower cross the Reuss where it leaves the lake, and the car-free old town spreads along the right bank with painted façades and squares. The Musegg Wall with its towers rises behind it. The KKL, the Culture and Convention Centre by architect Jean Nouvel, sits right beside Lucerne station, and the Swiss Museum of Transport stands on the lake at the eastern edge of the city. Grand hotels line the Schweizerhofquai and the Haldenstrasse, and the Art Deco Hotel Montana overlooks the town from the hillside. Chauffeurs drop at hotel entrances or the edge of the pedestrian zone.
Lucerne station
Lucerne station is a terminus on the lakefront next to the KKL. Trains reach Zurich HB in about 45 minutes, Zurich Airport in about an hour, Bern in about an hour and Interlaken on the scenic Luzern-Interlaken Express in about 1 hour 50 minutes. Events by month
- February: Lucerne Fasnacht, starting at 5 a.m. on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday (Schmutziger Donnerstag), with the old town packed and closed to traffic for six days.
- July: the Blue Balls festival around the lakefront and KKL.
- Mid-August to mid-September: the Lucerne Festival summer season of orchestral concerts at the KKL, the city's busiest period for evening pickups.
- October: the Lucerne Marathon, with road closures around the lake and the city.
- November and December: Christmas markets around the Franziskanerplatz and the station.

Arriving in Switzerland
Switzerland belongs to the Schengen area but not to the EU customs union. Travellers from outside Schengen clear immigration at Zurich. Since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System is fully operational at Swiss airports as at other Schengen external borders, so non-EU visitors on short stays register fingerprints and a facial image at their first crossing, and passports are not stamped. Goods above the Swiss allowances must be declared at customs. ETIAS has not started as of September 2026.
Driving realities: vignette, tunnels and passes
Traffic keeps to the right. Swiss motorways require the annual vignette, CHF 40 as a sticker or e-vignette; the 2026 vignette is valid from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027. The A2 south from Lucerne runs through the Seelisberg tunnel towards the Gotthard, where summer weekends bring long queues at the Gotthard road tunnel, so trips to Ticino or Milan allow extra time. The Brünig pass to Interlaken is open year-round but slow in snow. Central Lucerne has limited car access in the old town.
