EuroAirport: one building, two sectors
EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (codes BSL, MLH and EAP) is unusual: it stands entirely on French soil, about 8 km north-west of central Basel, and is run jointly by France and Switzerland. The terminal has a Swiss sector and a French sector, each with its own exit and customs. The Swiss side connects to Basel by a dedicated customs road that runs straight to the Swiss border without passing through French streets, so the drive to Basel SBB or the Messe usually takes 15 to 25 minutes.
A Swiss-registered chauffeur car picks up on the Swiss side. If you exit into the French sector by mistake, the car cannot simply drive round, so check the signs after baggage claim and follow "Basel / Schweiz". Travellers heading to Mulhouse, Colmar or Freiburg may be better served by the French exit, and we note this when you book. Standard pickup is at the designated pre-arranged pickup area outside your sector. A meet and greet with a name board is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations. Every pickup is flight-tracked: 60 minutes of waiting from landing on international arrivals, 30 minutes on domestic and 15 minutes on other pickups, then 15-minute blocks.
Zurich Airport as an alternative
Many long-haul flights go to Zurich Airport, about 85 km away. The drive on the A3 or via the A2 and A1 typically takes 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes, more at rush hour around the Baregg tunnel. Business jets also use the Zurich FBOs. See our Zurich page for that city.
Art Basel in June
Art Basel, the leading modern and contemporary art fair, takes place at Messe Basel, usually in the middle of June, with collector preview days before the public days. Satellite fairs such as Liste run the same week. The city fills completely: hotels are booked a year ahead, and the streets around the Messeplatz in Kleinbasel have restricted access for private cars. What works during the fair:
- Book early. Vehicles for Art Basel week are committed months in advance.
- Use an hourly booking so the car waits between the fair, galleries, private dinners and the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen.
- Agree a pickup point away from the Messeplatz itself, where trams and pedestrians take priority. The chauffeur messages the exact spot.
- Galleries and collectors with several guests use a Sprinter or multiple cars, planned by a coordinator and confirmed in writing.

Other events by month
- February or March: Basel Fasnacht, starting at 4 a.m. on the Monday after Ash Wednesday with the Morgestraich and running for three days; the old town is closed to traffic.
- June: Art Basel and its satellite fairs.
- August: the Rhine swimming season peaks and the Basel Tattoo military music festival fills the Kaserne, usually in July.
- Late October: the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament at the St. Jakobshalle.
- Late October to November: the autumn fair (Herbstmesse) on the Messeplatz and other squares.
- December: the Christmas market on the Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz.

Districts, campuses and hotels
The Rhine divides Grossbasel, with the old town, the Münster and the university, from Kleinbasel, with the Messe and a lively riverside. The Novartis Campus lies in St. Johann near the French border, and the Roche towers rise beside the Rhine near the Solitude park. The Dreispitz area mixes design schools, galleries and offices. The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois stands on the Rhine in the old town, and a cluster of hotels faces Basel SBB on the Centralbahnplatz. St. Jakob-Park, the football stadium of FC Basel, and the St. Jakobshalle are in the east near the motorway. A day of meetings across two campuses suits the hourly chauffeur service; pharma teams usually book through corporate accounts.
Basel's three railway stations
Basel SBB is the main Swiss station, with an SNCF section for French trains. Basel Badischer Bahnhof in Kleinbasel is run by Deutsche Bahn, even though it is on Swiss soil, and serves German ICE and regional trains. Zurich is about 55 minutes by train and Bern about an hour. Three countries, one city: borders and customs
Basel touches France and Germany, and many trips cross a border. Switzerland is in Schengen, so there are usually no passport checks between Switzerland, France and Germany, but spot checks happen, and Germany and France have run temporary internal checks at times, so carry your passport or ID. Switzerland is not in the EU customs union: goods above the duty-free allowances, company equipment and art must be declared, and art moved for a fair usually goes through a shipper, not in the car. Since 10 April 2026 the Entry/Exit System is fully operational, so non-EU visitors on short stays register fingerprints and a facial image at their first Schengen border, typically the airport. ETIAS has not started as of September 2026.
Driving: the Swiss vignette and beyond
Traffic keeps to the right. Swiss motorways require the annual vignette, CHF 40 as a sticker or e-vignette; the 2026 vignette is valid from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027. French motorways north of Mulhouse carry tolls on some sections, while German Autobahns are free for cars. Central Basel has narrow old-town streets, many trams and pedestrian zones, so the chauffeur may drop you a short walk from an address on the Münsterhügel.
Vehicles for Basel
A Standard Sedan covers airport runs for one or two people. Executive SUVs handle more luggage and winter trips to the Jura or the Black Forest. No charge more than 72 hours before pickup; 10 % within 72 hours; 50 % within 48 hours; 100 % within 24 hours or for a no-show. Child seats are free on request.
