Zurich Airport
Zurich Airport has the most long-haul connections and is where most visitors land. The route follows the A3 motorway along the Walensee to Chur, then climbs through Lenzerheide and Bivio over the Julier Pass (2,284 m), which is kept open all year. In summer the Albula Pass is an alternative; it closes in winter. When the Julier is closed by heavy snow, the chauffeur can load the car onto the Vereina car train from Klosters to Sagliains and continue through Zernez. Milan Malpensa and Linate
For travellers from Italy, the Middle East or southern Europe, Milan Malpensa and Linate are practical alternatives. The drive follows Lake Como to Chiavenna, crosses into Switzerland at Castasegna, climbs the Val Bregaglia and tops out at the Maloja Pass (1,815 m) before descending past Sils and Silvaplana to St. Moritz. Engadin Airport at Samedan
Engadin Airport at Samedan sits at 1,707 m and is the highest airport in Europe used by business jets. It has no scheduled airline service, and approaches in the narrow valley require specific pilot training, but it handles a lot of private traffic in the winter season, especially during the polo and horse-racing weekends. Which vehicle for the Engadin?
Winter visitors to St. Moritz typically travel with more luggage than on a city trip: ski bags, boots, evening wear for the gala dinners and, for some, polo or racing equipment. Choose from the fleet with that in mind:
- Executive SUV: two to four guests with skis and cases, and the most sure-footed vehicle on the Julier and Maloja passes in snow.
- Luxury Executive Sedan: for one or two travellers with light luggage, or for evening bookings within the resort.
- Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van: families, staff and equipment together, or a group arriving on one jet at Samedan.
- Rolls-Royce, Maybach or Bentley (partner): gala evenings at Badrutt's Palace or the Kulm; availability depends on the season and should be requested early.
- Armoured SUV or sedan (partner): on request, after a risk assessment.

The Swiss vignette, tolls and the Italian border
Switzerland charges for motorway use through an annual vignette rather than per-trip tolls. It costs CHF 40, comes as a sticker or an e-vignette linked to the number plate, and the 2026 vignette is valid from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027; details are on the Swiss government portal. Every vehicle using the A3 from Zurich needs one. The pass roads themselves are not motorways. On the Milan route, the Castasegna border crossing between Italy and Switzerland is where Swiss customs checks goods; Switzerland is in Schengen but outside the EU customs union, so large purchases or equipment may need to be declared.
Winter driving in the Engadin
Swiss law does not set a calendar date for winter tyres, but a driver whose car is not fit for the conditions is liable, and in practice every vehicle on these roads runs winter tyres from late autumn to spring. Chains become mandatory where a sign shows it, most often on the Julier and Maloja during snowfall. The Engadin valley floor is at about 1,800 m, and temperatures well below zero are normal in January.
Arriving in Switzerland: Schengen and customs
Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, so travellers flying into Zurich from Germany, France or Italy do not pass passport control, while those arriving from the UK, North America or the Gulf do. The EU Entry/Exit System also applies at Swiss external borders for non-EU visitors. Customs is separate from Schengen: Switzerland is not in the EU customs union, so at Zurich you choose the green or red channel, and on the Milan route the Castasegna crossing can check goods. Guests bringing high-value items, large quantities of food or wine, or equipment for an event should read the Swiss customs rules before travel.
Summer in the Engadin
St. Moritz has a second season from late June to September. The lakes of Sils and Silvaplana are known for sailing and kitesurfing, the valley has marked hiking and cycling routes, and the passes, including the Albula, reopen to traffic. Summer visitors often book a chauffeur for a day over the Bernina Pass to Poschiavo and Tirano, or a scenic loop through the Julier and Albula passes. Where to stay: villages and hotels
- St. Moritz Dorf: the upper village with the shops on Via Serlas and hotels such as Badrutt's Palace, the Kulm and the Carlton.
- St. Moritz Bad: the lower village by the lake, with the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains and apartments.
- Suvretta: chalets on the hillside west of the town and Suvretta House with its own ski access.
- Celerina and Samedan: quieter villages close to the airport and the Cresta Run finish.
- Pontresina: gateway to Diavolezza and the Bernina Pass.
- Sils and Silvaplana: lakeside villages at the foot of Corvatsch, popular for cross-country skiing and kitesurfing in summer.

St. Moritz winter season events by month
- December: the Cresta Run and the Olympia Bob Run usually open around Christmas; New Year week is one of the busiest of the season.
- Late January: the Snow Polo World Cup is played on the frozen lake, and the St. Moritz Gourmet Festival usually takes place in late January or early February.
- February: White Turf horse racing on the frozen lake, usually on three consecutive Sundays.
- March: the Engadin Skimarathon, usually on the second Sunday of March, runs 42 km from Maloja to S-chanf and closes some roads in the valley.
- Summer: hiking, the Festival da Jazz in July and classic car meetings bring a second, shorter season.

By train: the Rhaetian Railway
St. Moritz station is on the lake below the village and is the terminus of the Albula line from Chur, part of the Rhaetian Railway's UNESCO-listed Albula and Bernina route. The Glacier Express runs to Zermatt in about eight hours, and the Bernina Express crosses to Tirano in Italy. Many visitors take the train from Zurich for the views and a car for the last few minutes; the chauffeur meets you at the station with space for the luggage you sent ahead or carried.
