Geneva Airport to Lausanne
Lausanne has no commercial airport of its own; travellers use Geneva Airport, about 60 km away. The drive along the A1 motorway usually takes 45 minutes to 1 hour 5 minutes, more in the evening peak around Morges. Use the Swiss sector exit; the French sector serves France. Standard pickup is at the airport's designated pre-arranged pickup area, and the chauffeur texts the exact location on landing. A meet and greet in arrivals with a name board is an add-on. Add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Every airport pickup is flight-tracked. Waiting included: 60 minutes from landing on international flights, 30 minutes on domestic flights, 15 minutes on other pickups, then 15-minute blocks. The International Olympic Committee has its headquarters at Olympic House in Vidy, on the lakefront near the Château de Vidy, and the Olympic Museum stands in a park at Ouchy. Dozens of international sports federations and organisations are based in and around the city, many at the Maison du Sport International near Vidy. The Court of Arbitration for Sport is also headquartered in Lausanne and hears cases there. Other federations sit along the lake, from Nyon to Montreux.
What this means for ground transport:
- Visitors to Olympic House usually need to be on a visitor list; the chauffeur drops at the entrance and waits nearby.
- During an IOC Session, Executive Board week or a federation congress, several delegations move between Vidy, Ouchy hotels and venues at the same times, so book early.
- Hearings at CAS can run long. An hourly booking keeps the car available without guessing an end time.
Where to stay and meet
Ouchy on the lakefront has the Beau-Rivage Palace and the Royal Savoy, while the Lausanne Palace stands in the centre near the Place Saint-François. The city climbs steeply from the lake to the Flon district, the old town and the cathedral, which is why the M2 metro is one of the steepest in the world. EPFL and the University of Lausanne share a campus at Ecublens and Dorigny in the west, with the SwissTech Convention Center on the EPFL site. The CHUV university hospital lies north of the centre, and the IMD business school sits on the lake near Ouchy. The Palais de Beaulieu hosts congresses and shows. Lausanne station and rail links
Lausanne station, on the Avenue de la Gare above Ouchy, is one of the busiest in Switzerland. Trains reach Geneva Cornavin in about 35 to 50 minutes and Geneva Airport directly, Bern in about 1 hour 5 minutes, and Paris by TGV Lyria in a little under 4 hours. - July: the Festival de la Cité in the old town; the Montreux Jazz Festival 25 km away fills the lakeside hotels.
- Usually August: Athletissima, the Diamond League athletics meeting at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise.
- October: the Lausanne Marathon along the lakeshore, with road closures between Lausanne and the Lavaux.
- December: the Bô Noël Christmas festival in the centre.

Lavaux, Montreux and the lake
East of the city, the Lavaux vineyard terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stretch towards Vevey and Montreux. Entering Switzerland: Schengen and EES
Switzerland is in Schengen but outside the EU customs union. On a flight from outside Schengen you clear immigration at Geneva or Zurich. Since 10 April 2026 the Entry/Exit System has been fully operational: non-EU visitors on short stays register fingerprints and a facial image at their first Schengen crossing, and no stamp is used. Customs rules apply to goods above the allowances, including for travellers coming from France. ETIAS is not yet in operation as of September 2026.
Driving: vignette, hills and parking
Switzerland drives on the right. Motorway use requires the annual vignette, CHF 40 as a sticker or e-vignette; the 2026 vignette is valid from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027. In Lausanne itself the gradients, one-way streets and the pedestrianised old town mean drop-offs sometimes happen a short walk from the door. The A1 between Geneva and Lausanne carries heavy commuter traffic from about 7:00 to 9:00 and 16:30 to 18:30.
Vehicles
A business or Luxury Executive Sedan suits most Geneva transfers. An executive SUV adds room for ski gear on the way to Verbier or Gstaad.
