Which airport: Cologne Bonn or Dusseldorf?

Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) is about 15 km southeast of the cathedral. Its two linked terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, sit above a railway station, and the drive to the city centre or Deutz on the A59 and A4 typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. Bonn is a similar distance in the other direction. The airport operates around the clock, with many night cargo movements; see the airport's own site.

Dusseldorf Airport (DUS) has a wider long-haul schedule and is about 55 to 60 km north. Allow 45 to 70 minutes to Cologne on the A3 or A57, longer in the weekday rush. Long-haul travellers also land at Frankfurt Airport, roughly 180 km away: about 1 h 45 to 2 h 15 by car, or around an hour by ICE to Köln Hbf, where a chauffeur can meet the train.

At both airports the chauffeur waits at the designated pickup area for pre-booked cars and messages the exact spot after landing. Koelnmesse lies in Deutz on the right bank of the Rhine, with entrances at the South, East and North sides of the grounds. During big fairs, taxis and private cars queue at the entrances in the late afternoon, and police direct traffic on the Deutz-Mülheimer Straße and around the Zoobrücke. We agree a named entrance and a staging point in advance, and for multi-day shows an hourly car can wait at a nearby holding area.

Carnival, Christmas and other Cologne dates

Cologne's carnival season opens at 11:11 on 11 November, but the street carnival peaks from Weiberfastnacht (Thursday) to Rosenmontag, the Monday parade, usually in February or early March. The old town and parade route close to cars, and bookings that week need precise drop points. Christmas markets fill the Roncalliplatz by the cathedral, the Alter Markt and the Neumarkt from late November until just before Christmas. Concerts at the LANXESS arena in Deutz and 1. FC Köln matches at the RheinEnergieSTADION in Müngersdorf bring their own evening traffic; the event transportation team stages cars away from the crowd.

The Cologne Umweltzone and local driving

Cologne has a low-emission zone (Umweltzone) covering most of the built-up city on both banks of the Rhine. Any car driving inside must display the green emissions sticker, the grüne Plakette, and that includes foreign-registered vehicles. The broader diesel driving bans that once applied in some German cities were lifted in 2024, but the green-sticker rule remains. Germany drives on the right; many stretches of autobahn around the city carry variable speed limits, and the A1, A3 and A4 rings around Cologne are among the country's most congested motorways at peak times.

Districts, hotels and business addresses

Business visits cluster in the Innenstadt around the cathedral and the Ring boulevards, the Rheinauhafen with its crane houses, the MediaPark, and Deutz near the fairground. Media and insurance offices spread into Ossendorf and Müngersdorf. Hotels travellers commonly name include the Excelsior Hotel Ernst opposite the cathedral, the Hyatt Regency in Deutz, the Hotel im Wasserturm and The Qvest in the Gereon quarter.

Arriving in Germany: EES and ETIAS

Germany is in the Schengen Area. If you fly in from outside it, non-EU passport holders register biometric data under the EU Entry/Exit System, in full operation since 10 April 2026. ETIAS for visa-exempt nationalities has not launched yet; the EU travel portal will announce the start date.
