Hamburg Airport: terminals and pickup
Hamburg Airport, in Fuhlsbuttel, is only about 9 km north of the Rathaus, one of the shortest airport runs of any large European city. Crew changes and the Port of Hamburg
Beyond cruises, Hamburg is one of Europe's biggest container ports. Crew joining or leaving ships at the Burchardkai, Altenwerder, Tollerort and Eurogate container terminals, or at shipyards such as Blohm+Voss, need transfers timed to vessel movements that change by the hour. The Messe, CCH and the trade-fair calendar
Hamburg Messe und Congress sits in the city centre next to the Planten un Blomen park, with exhibition halls on both sides of the Karolinenstrasse and the renovated CCH Congress Center Hamburg, which reopened in 2023, at Dammtor. Hauptbahnhof, Dammtor and Altona stations
Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is one of Germany's busiest stations, with ICE and IC trains to Berlin in under two hours, to Frankfurt, Cologne and Munich, and to Copenhagen. Its surroundings are congested, so pickups use the designated areas on the Kirchenallee or Steintorwall side; your confirmation gives the exact point. Dammtor, one stop west, is the station for the Messe, the CCH and the Alster hotels. Altona serves western Hamburg and some trains towards Sylt and Kiel.
Neighbourhoods and landmark hotels
Central Hamburg wraps around the two Alster lakes. The Altstadt and Neustadt hold the Rathaus, the Jungfernstieg and the main shopping streets. HafenCity and the UNESCO-listed Speicherstadt warehouse district line the old port south of the centre, with the Elbphilharmonie at the western tip. St. Pauli has the Reeperbahn and the Landungsbrucken piers. West along the Elbe, Altona, Ottensen, Othmarschen and Blankenese mix media offices, riverside restaurants and villas. Harvestehude, Rotherbaum and Eppendorf around the Aussenalster are residential and consular.

Kiel is a busy cruise and ferry port in its own right, and Bremen and Berlin are frequent business runs. For Sylt, cars cross to the island on a car train from Niebull, since there is no road bridge. The Fehmarnbelt tunnel to Denmark is still under construction, so Copenhagen trips use the ferry across the Fehmarn Belt. Book these as intercity transfers.
Driving in Hamburg
Germany drives on the right, and city streets default to 50 km/h with many 30 km/h zones. The A7 motorway runs north to south under the Elbe through the Elbe tunnel, a well-known bottleneck, and the long-running A7 widening works north of the tunnel add delays. The port's Kohlbrand bridge carries lorry traffic to the container terminals. Hamburg has no general low-emission zone of the kind Berlin uses: the diesel restrictions it introduced in 2018 on sections of Max-Brauer-Allee and Stresemannstrasse were lifted in 2023. Harbour festival weekends, marathon Sunday and Reeperbahn nights close streets around St. Pauli and the Landungsbrucken.
Entry into Germany: EES, ETIAS and passport control
Hamburg Airport is a Schengen airport. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully in operation since 10 April 2026, so non-EU visitors on short stays have their passport scanned and a facial image and, for most, fingerprints recorded at their first Schengen entry, whether that is at Hamburg or at a hub such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Copenhagen. There is no ETIAS application to make yet; the EU has not fixed a date. Cruise passengers starting or ending a voyage in Hamburg go through the same checks when the itinerary leaves the Schengen area. A day in and around Hamburg by the hour
Not every Hamburg booking is a transfer.
