Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and the Airport Plaza
Hamburg Airport is one of the closest major airports to its city centre in Europe, about 8 to 9 km north of the Rathaus in the district of Fuhlsbüttel. Terminals 1 and 2 stand side by side and are joined by the Airport Plaza, which houses the central security checkpoint and the shopping area. Lufthansa and Star Alliance partners mainly use Terminal 2, while Terminal 1 serves many other European and leisure airlines. Arrivals exit at ground level in each terminal, a short walk apart. Passport control and the Entry/Exit System
Germany is in Schengen, so most European flights arrive with no passport check. Flights from the UK, Turkey, the Gulf and North America pass German Federal Police border control, where the EU Entry/Exit System now records non-EU visitors with fingerprints and a facial image on first entry. ETIAS has not launched yet, so no advance authorisation is required. The A7 and the Elbe tunnel are the main bottleneck for trips south of the river, including Steinwerder and Finkenwerder, and long-running roadworks on the A7 add delays at peak hours.
S-Bahn and rail
The S1 S-Bahn line starts at the station below the terminals and reaches Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and Jungfernstieg in about 25 minutes; tickets and timetables are on HVV. For long-distance trains, Deutsche Bahn runs ICE services from Hauptbahnhof to Berlin, Copenhagen and the south. The S1 is a sensible choice with light luggage for a hotel near a station. A chauffeur is more practical with cruise luggage, children, a group, a late landing or a destination away from the S-Bahn, such as Blankenese, the Elbchaussee or Steinwerder. Timing a fly-cruise day in Hamburg
On embarkation days at Altona or Steinwerder, cruise lines usually give each passenger a check-in window, and ships sail to a fixed time. If you are flying in on the day, choose a flight that lands at least four to five hours before the ship's all-aboard time, then book the car to the terminal with your flight number. The chauffeur is timed to the landing, so a moderate delay is absorbed, and the short distance from the airport means you can reach Altona in 25 to 40 minutes on a normal day. Steinwerder sits across the Elbe and depends on the Köhlbrand bridge or the Elbe tunnel, both prone to queues, so give it more margin. Disembarkation mornings are the busiest time for cars at the terminals, with thousands of passengers leaving within a few hours; a booked pickup, with the ship's name and your group number in the booking notes, keeps things orderly. Kiel departures need an extra hour on the road.
Delays, waiting and cancellations
If the flight is late, the chauffeur works to the new arrival time and the delay costs you nothing. When the included waiting runs out, further time is charged in 15-minute blocks. Cancel for free up to 72 hours before pickup; inside 72 hours the charge is 10%, inside 48 hours 50%, and inside 24 hours or on a no-show 100%.
