Nuremberg Airport (NUE)
Albrecht Dürer Airport Nuremberg is one of Germany's closest airports to its city, about 7 km north of the old town. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 form a single building. Dates move from year to year, so check the organiser's calendar. During a big show, the Messe ring road and the Münchener Straße back up at opening and closing time. We agree an entrance, usually Mitte, Ost or West, and a staging point, and for multi-day stays an hourly car can hold nearby.
Christkindlesmarkt: Advent evenings in the old town
Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt on the Hauptmarkt is one of the oldest and best-known Christmas markets in Germany. It opens on the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent, with the Christkind reading the prologue from the gallery of the Frauenkirche, and closes on 24 December. The Children's Christmas market and the Market of the Sister Cities sit alongside it. Much of the old town inside the walls is pedestrianised or access-restricted, and on Advent weekends the streets near the Hauptmarkt are packed. Nuremberg forms a metropolitan region with Fürth, Erlangen and Schwabach. Erlangen, about 20 km north, is home to large Siemens and Siemens Healthineers sites and the university hospital; the drive usually takes 20 to 30 minutes on the A73. Herzogenaurach, 25 km northwest, hosts the headquarters of adidas, Puma and Schaeffler, reached in 25 to 35 minutes. A day split between these towns is simplest with the hourly chauffeur service.

Roads and driving in Franconia
Three autobahns meet at Nuremberg: the A9 between Munich and Berlin, the A3 between Frankfurt and Passau, and the A6 towards Heilbronn and the Czech border. Roadworks on the A9 and A3 are frequent and create queues at the Nuremberg interchanges. Germany drives on the right, and parts of the autobahn have no general speed limit, though many sections near the city do. Flights from non-Schengen countries into NUE, including the UK and Turkey, pass passport control, where non-EU travellers now register under the EU Entry/Exit System, fully live since 10 April 2026. ETIAS, the pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals, has not launched yet; confirm on the EU travel portal.
