Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 at MUC?
Munich splits airlines between two buildings:
- Terminal 2 is the Lufthansa and Star Alliance terminal, with a satellite building for extra gates reached by an underground train. Most long-haul Lufthansa flights use it.
- Terminal 1 is divided into modules A, B, C, D and E, each with its own arrivals area and short walk to the kerb. Many non-alliance, oneworld and SkyTeam airlines use Terminal 1.
Between them is the Munich Airport Center (MAC), a covered plaza with the S-Bahn station, a hotel and shops. The chauffeur is routed by your flight number, so it matters that the number in your booking is correct.
Where you meet the chauffeur
The standard pickup is curbside at the area Munich Airport designates for pre-booked cars and chauffeur services, outside the arrivals level of your terminal or module. Border control and customs timing
Germany is in Schengen. Arrivals from outside Schengen, including most Terminal 2 satellite flights from North America and Asia, pass German Federal Police border control, where the EU Entry/Exit System is in operation for non-EU travellers. ETIAS has not started. Allow 30-55 minutes from landing to the kerb on a long-haul arrival, and 15-30 minutes for a Schengen flight with checked bags. Included waiting on international arrivals is 60 minutes from actual landing and on German domestic flights 30 minutes; beyond that, time is charged in 15-minute blocks.

Munich has a low-emission zone inside the Mittlerer Ring. During Oktoberfest, which runs from mid or late September to the first weekend of October, hotels fill and traffic around the Theresienwiese and the Hauptbahnhof is heavy; plan extra time and book early. S-Bahn and bus from Munich Airport
The S-Bahn station under the MAC is served by the S8, reaching Munich Hauptbahnhof in about 40 minutes via Ostbahnhof, and the S1, which takes about 45 minutes via the north-western suburbs. Onward to Salzburg, Tyrol and the lakes
Munich is the usual gateway for Upper Bavaria and western Austria. Point-to-point runs to Salzburg, Innsbruck, Kitzbuhel, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Lake Tegernsee are booked as fixed-fare intercity transfers. Austrian motorways require a toll vignette for cars. Passport checks at the Austrian border are occasional, so keep your passport handy.

When to leave for a MUC departure
Arrive about two hours ahead for European flights and two and a half to three hours for long-haul, particularly from Terminal 2's satellite. From the Altstadt that means leaving roughly an hour earlier than your target arrival time at the airport. Drop-off is at the departures kerb of your terminal or Terminal 1 module.
Business travel through Munich

Winter driving and seasonal peaks from MUC
Bavaria's winter shapes many airport runs. German law requires winter tyres in wintry conditions, and Austria requires winter equipment on cars in winter conditions between November and April, so the vehicles that affiliates use for alpine work are set up for it. Snow on the A8 towards Salzburg and the Inntal can slow journeys, and the ski-season changeover days at the weekend bring queues at the border and in the valleys. The Christmas markets, usually from late November until just before Christmas, draw visitors to Marienplatz and the old town, and the central streets around them are busy in the evenings. None of this changes the fare, which is fixed when you book, but it does change how early you should leave for a flight. For a winter departure from Kitzbuhel or Innsbruck, plan for the long end of the time ranges.
