Istanbul Airport opened in 2018 and replaced Atatürk Airport for scheduled passenger flights in 2019. It works as one very large terminal building, so walking distances from the gate to baggage claim are long; allow for that when judging how much of the included wait you will use. Sabiha Gökçen is smaller and faster to exit, but the road to European-side hotels crosses the Bosphorus and can be slow at the evening peak.

Crossing the Bosphorus by car
Five crossings shape every Istanbul journey that changes continent, and your chauffeur picks the one that suits the time of day:
- 15 July Martyrs Bridge (formerly the Bosphorus Bridge), linking Ortaköy and Beylerbeyi, the most central and often the most congested.
- Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, further north between Rumelihisarı and Kavacık, used for Levent and Maslak.
- Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, far north near the Black Sea, part of the Northern Marmara Motorway and often the fastest route between SAW and Istanbul Airport.

Entry to Türkiye: visa exemptions and the e-Visa
Türkiye is not in the EU or the Schengen Area, so the EU's Entry/Exit System does not apply at Istanbul's airports. As of 2026, citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and most EU countries can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Some other nationalities, including Australians and New Zealanders, need an e-Visa before travel. The only official source is evisa.gov.tr, where approval usually arrives quickly; avoid third-party sites that add fees. Rules change, so check with your consulate before booking a non-refundable flight.
Galataport and cruise calls
Galataport Istanbul is the cruise terminal in Karaköy, on the European shore beside the Golden Horn, with an underground passenger terminal and a waterfront promenade above it. Sultanahmet is about 10 to 20 minutes away, Taksim 10 to 20 minutes, and Istanbul Airport usually 50 to 80 minutes. Driving realities in Istanbul
Türkiye drives on the right. Istanbul's traffic is among the heaviest in Europe, with peaks roughly 07:00 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 20:30, and Friday evenings are often the slowest of the week. Coastal roads along the Bosphorus are scenic but narrow, and some historic streets in Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu are pedestrianised, so the chauffeur may stop a short walk from the door. - Keep your passport and boarding pass handy: the walk from the gate to passport control at IST can take 15 to 25 minutes on its own.
