VCE is the usual choice, with the widest range of long-haul and European flights. Treviso is closer and handles low-cost and some private traffic. Pickup at Venice Marco Polo
Standard pickup is curbside at the airport's designated pre-arranged pickup area in front of arrivals. The chauffeur messages the plate and the exact spot when your bags are off. Meet and greet with a name board inside the hall is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. Flights are tracked: international arrivals include 60 minutes of waiting from landing and domestic flights 30 minutes, then 15-minute blocks. The road up: A27, SS51 and winter rules
The route leaves VCE on the A27 motorway north past Treviso to its end near Belluno, then follows the SS51 Alemagna road up the Piave and Boite valleys through Pieve di Cadore and San Vito di Cadore. The last stretch is mountain road with villages and, in winter, snow. Veneto rules require winter tyres or snow chains on board on these roads from 15 November to 15 April, and chauffeurs drive the valley in all conditions. Saturday changeover days in February and around Christmas and New Year see long queues on the SS51, so a morning arrival often saves an hour. Traffic drives on the right.
After the 2026 Winter Olympics
Cortina co-hosted the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, held from 6 to 22 February 2026, seventy years after it staged the 1956 Winter Games. Women's alpine skiing took place on the Olympia delle Tofane course, curling in the Olympic Ice Stadium, and bobsleigh, luge and skeleton on the newly rebuilt Cortina Sliding Centre. The Paralympic Games followed in March 2026. The legacy for visitors is practical: upgraded lifts, road works on the SS51 corridor and a town used to moving large groups. Around town and over the passes
Corso Italia is the pedestrian heart of Cortina, lined with shops and the Basilica of Saints Philip and James, so drop-offs happen at the ends of the street or at the hotel door on the surrounding lanes. Guests stay at hotels such as the Cristallo, the Miramonti Majestic and the Hotel de la Poste, or in chalets on the slopes towards Pocol and Lacedel whose drives can be steep and icy. Share the chalet name and any gate code at booking.
Summer brings a different set of trips: the Passo Giau and Passo Falzarego roads, the Cinque Torri, Lago di Braies, and the toll road up to Rifugio Auronzo below the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, all inside the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage area. These suit hourly chauffeur service or a full day trip. The Lavaredo Ultra Trail usually fills the town in late June.
Private jets and rail
Private aircraft generally use the business aviation facilities at Venice Marco Polo or Treviso, with Bolzano an option for smaller jets; see private aviation and FBO. The nearest railhead is Calalzo-Pieve di Cadore-Cortina, about 35 km and 40 minutes away, on a branch line from Padua and Venice. Travellers coming by high-speed train usually take a car from Venezia Santa Lucia or Venezia Mestre instead. Timetables are on Trenitalia.
Arriving from outside Schengen
Non-EU travellers landing at Venice from outside the Schengen area now go through the EU Entry/Exit System, operational since 12 October 2025 and fully rolled out by April 2026. The first entry records fingerprints and a facial image, which can slow the border queue at busy times. ETIAS, the travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, has not launched; the EU has dropped its late-2026 target and will publish a date well in advance. Vehicles for mountain transfers
An executive SUV is the default Cortina car: room for skis and boots, and sure-footed on snow. A Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van carries a family or ski group with all equipment in one move.
