The town of Civitavecchia
The town itself is compact. The Forte Michelangelo guards the harbour mouth, the seafront Passeggiata Guglielmo Marconi runs south, and Civitavecchia station, a short walk from the port gate, has regional trains to Rome. Ferries to Sardinia, Sicily, Barcelona and Tunisia also leave from here, so the port roads are busy in summer even on days with few cruise ships. If you are catching an overnight ferry to Porto Cervo via Olbia, the chauffeur drops at the ferry check-in rather than the cruise terminals.
Entry rules: EES and ETIAS
Italy applies Schengen border rules. The EU Entry/Exit System has run in full since April 2026, recording fingerprints and a facial image of non-EU short-stay visitors at the first Schengen entry point, which for fly-cruise guests is usually Fiumicino or another European airport. A cruise that starts outside Schengen and enters at Civitavecchia is processed at the port. ETIAS has not launched as of September 2026, and the EU has not fixed a new start date.
