Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport (BRI)
BRI sits at Palese, about 10 km north-west of the city centre, and has a single passenger terminal. Standard pickup is curbside at the designated pre-arranged pickup area outside arrivals; the chauffeur sends the car details as you collect your bags. A name-board meet and greet in the arrivals hall is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Waiting is included from the actual landing: 60 minutes for flights from abroad, 30 minutes for flights from Italian airports, then 15-minute blocks. The run into central Bari usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. Brindisi (BDS), about 115 km south, is the other Puglia airport and is closer to Lecce and the Salento. Both are run by Aeroporti di Puglia.
The port of Bari: cruises and Adriatic ferries
Bari is one of the Adriatic's main passenger ports. Cruise ships berth at the cruise terminal on the port's long breakwater, close to the old town, and ferries sail to Durres in Albania, Bar in Montenegro, Dubrovnik in Croatia, and Patras, Igoumenitsa and Corfu in Greece. Ferry and cruise traffic use different quays, and on summer evenings departures to Greece and Albania bring long lines of cars and trucks to the port gates, so we set pickup times with that in mind. Cruise guests often book a half day to Polignano and Alberobello, or a full day to Matera, with the ship's all-aboard time as the fixed end point. The SS16 coast road runs south towards Monopoli and Fasano, and the A14 motorway heads north towards Foggia and inland. Matera, in Basilicata, is reached on ordinary roads with no motorway, so allow the upper end of the range.
Masserie, trulli and the Valle d'Itria
Much of the high-end travel in Puglia goes to fortified farmhouse hotels, the masserie, in the olive country between Monopoli, Fasano and Ostuni, and to trulli houses in the Valle d'Itria around Alberobello, Locorotondo and Cisternino. Savelletri, on the coast below Fasano, is a cluster of resort estates; Borgo Egnazia there hosted the G7 summit in June 2024. Estate lanes are narrow and gravelled, so an executive SUV or Luxury Executive Sedan is usually better than a large van at the final gate. For a day across the valley, hourly chauffeur service keeps one car with you between towns.
Inside the city: Bari Vecchia and Murat
Bari Vecchia, the old town on its peninsula, holds the Basilica of San Nicola and the Norman-Swabian castle, and its alleys are closed to general traffic. The grid of the Murat quarter to the south is the commercial centre, with Via Sparano for shopping and the Teatro Petruzzelli, one of Italy's largest opera houses. Parts of the centre are limited traffic zones (ZTL), so drop-offs are made at the permitted edge. The Grande Albergo delle Nazioni stands on the seafront promenade. Business travel centres on the Fiera del Levante grounds and on offices along the waterfront, and a split day between the port, the Fiera and meetings in town fits the corporate car service.
Rail and road links
Bari Centrale is the city's main station, with Frecciarossa and Italo high-speed trains to Rome in about four hours and regional lines along the coast. A rail link also runs from the airport to Bari Centrale. For three or more people, a door-to-door intercity transfer to Lecce, Matera or Naples is often simpler than the train. Traffic drives on the right, and the SS16 is busy on summer weekends near the beaches of Polignano and Monopoli.
Events through the year
The Feast of San Nicola, usually on 7 to 9 May, brings processions by land and sea and heavy crowds in the old town. The Fiera del Levante trade fair is usually held in September. Arriving from outside Schengen
Direct flights from the UK and other non-Schengen countries mean a border check at BRI. The EU Entry/Exit System, which has been running since 12 October 2025 and fully since April 2026, captures fingerprints and a facial photo from non-EU visitors on their first entry. Ferry arrivals from Albania and Montenegro also cross the external border in the port. ETIAS has not started; the EU has withdrawn its 2026 target and will give notice of the start date.
