Genoa airport pickup

The SP227: why the last 5 km matter
The provincial road from Santa Margherita Ligure to Portofino hugs the cliffs past Paraggi bay, with one lane each way, walls on one side and the sea on the other. Buses, bicycles and parked delivery vans all share it. In summer, and at weekends from spring, traffic slows to walking pace, and the road can be closed for events, landslides or when visitor numbers are high. Large coaches are not a practical way to reach the village; groups usually stay in Santa Margherita or Rapallo and use vans or boats for the last stretch.
Portofino's ZTL and where the car stops
The historic centre of Portofino is a limited traffic zone for residents and authorised vehicles, watched by cameras, and the only public car park is the covered garage near Piazza della Liberta. Chauffeurs therefore drop and collect at the garage area or at hotel entrances with their own access, and you walk the last few minutes to the Piazzetta and harbour. Santa Margherita and Rapallo: the practical bases
Many visitors stay in Santa Margherita Ligure, at the Grand Hotel Miramare or the Imperiale Palace, or in Rapallo, at the Excelsior Palace, and visit Portofino by car, boat or on foot. Both towns have wider seafronts, easier car access and train stations. Boats, yachts and San Fruttuoso
Water taxis and scheduled boats link Santa Margherita, Rapallo, Camogli and Portofino, and continue to the abbey of San Fruttuoso, which has no road. Superyachts moor off Portofino in summer; crew and guests often need a car from Santa Margherita's marina to Genoa airport or Milan. - 23 April: the Feast of San Giorgio, Portofino's patron, with a procession and a bonfire on the harbour front.
- May to October: the season for weddings and yacht arrivals.
- September: the Genoa International Boat Show at the city's waterfront, usually the busiest transfer week in the area.
- Summer: concerts and events at Santa Margherita and Rapallo, when the SP227 is at its slowest.

Cruise passengers and the Genoa port
Cruise ships call at the Stazione Marittima in Genoa, a short drive from the A10. Passengers finishing a cruise often spend a few nights in Portofino or Santa Margherita before flying home, and passengers starting one arrive from Milan or Nice. Sprinters are fine to Santa Margherita but less practical in the village.
