The Genoa cruise terminal
Genoa's passenger port sits in the old harbour, directly below the Piazza Principe railway station and the Palazzo del Principe. The terminal company, Stazioni Marittime, runs the historic cruise building at Ponte dei Mille and the adjacent Ponte Andrea Doria, with ferry berths for Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily and North Africa a short way west. The port as a whole is managed by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority.

Embarkation drop-off at Ponte dei Mille
Pre-arranged cars take the port entrance off Via Adua and stop at the terminal's drop-off lane, where porters collect tagged suitcases. Allow 10-20 minutes from hotels in the old town or Via XX Settembre; in summer, add time for ferry queues that build near the harbour roads on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. Arrive at the start of your check-in window and before boarding closes, usually two hours ahead of sailing.
Disembarkation: where to find your car
Leaving the ship, follow the signs out of the baggage hall to the ground transportation area in front of the terminal, where pre-arranged vehicles are allowed to wait. The chauffeur stays with the car; a name-board meeting at the exit is an add-on called meet and greet, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. Genoa's airport sits on reclaimed land by the sea west of the centre; see the airport website for current routes. Many travellers fly long-haul into Milan Malpensa or Nice instead. Every airport pickup is flight-tracked, with 60 minutes of included waiting on international arrivals and 30 on domestic ones, and curbside pickup at the designated pre-arranged area is standard. For a same-day flight home from Malpensa, leave the port no later than about 10:00 for an afternoon departure.
Pre- and post-cruise stays
Genoa rewards a night ashore: the Rolli palaces on Via Garibaldi, the old port by Renzo Piano and the aquarium are all within a few minutes of the terminal. The Grand Hotel Savoia stands next to Piazza Principe, a two-minute drive from the ship. Many passengers prefer the Riviera: Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino are 40-60 minutes east, and Milan hotels are about two hours north. A Milan-to-ship transfer can start at Milano Centrale if part of your group arrives by rail.
Port-day tours along the Ligurian coast
An hourly chauffeur books for three hours minimum. Three to four hours covers the old town, the Spianata di Castelletto viewpoint and Boccadasse fishing village. A longer day reaches Portofino, where cars stop at the town's car park at the entrance to the village, and Camogli on the way back. The Cinque Terre villages are about 90 minutes east and are best reached by the chauffeur dropping you at Levanto or La Spezia for the coastal train, since the village roads are narrow and parking is scarce.
