Arriving at Catania Fontanarossa (CTA)
Catania is Sicily's busiest airport and the gateway for the east coast. Most departures and arrivals use the main passenger building, Terminal A, with some flights handled in the smaller Terminal C next to it. Standard pickup is curbside at the designated pre-arranged pickup area outside arrivals; your chauffeur sends the car details once you land. The fastest line is the A18 Messina-Catania toll motorway, leaving at the Taormina exit and climbing the hairpins of the SS114 branch to the town. Summer weekends back up on the stretch past Acireale, so give yourself a margin on a departure day.
Getting to a hotel inside the ZTL
Taormina's historic centre is a limited traffic zone (ZTL) with camera-controlled gates, and Corso Umberto between Porta Messina and Porta Catania is pedestrian. Guests of hotels inside the zone are normally registered by the hotel for authorised access, so tell the hotel your arrival time and the vehicle will be added where it allows it. Where it does not, the chauffeur stops at the nearest permitted point, usually near Porta Messina or the Porta Catania car park, and helps with luggage to the hotel's porter service. The large hotels on the edges of town, such as the San Domenico Palace and the Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo, and the beach hotels at Mazzaro reached by the coast road, are simpler drop-offs.

Etna, Siracusa and the east-coast day
Taormina is a base for the classic Sicilian day trips. Etna's south side at Rifugio Sapienza is the main approach for the cable car and summit tours; the north side via Linguaglossa and Piano Provenzana is quieter and nearer. Siracusa and the island of Ortigia fill a full day, often with a stop at Noto on the way back. The Alcantara gorges sit about 30 minutes inland. Entering Italy: EES and ETIAS in 2026
Travellers arriving directly from outside the Schengen area, for example on a London flight, pass the external border check at Catania. Since the EU Entry/Exit System began on 12 October 2025, and after its phased rollout ended in April 2026, non-EU visitors register fingerprints and a facial image the first time they enter, which can lengthen the passport queue. Arriving from Rome or Munich, there is no border check at all. ETIAS, the future online travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, is not running yet: the EU has withdrawn its late-2026 target and will announce a start date months ahead. The season runs from Easter to October, peaking in July and August. The Taormina Film Festival is usually held in June or July in the Teatro Antico, which also hosts summer concerts and opera. Weddings fill the spring and September, often with ceremonies in town and dinners in villas outside it, a job for our wedding limousine service.
