The SS163 Amalfitana: what drivers deal with
The Strada Statale 163 runs about 40 km along the cliffs from Vietri sul Mare to Positano, with tight hairpins, single-file stretches where two buses cannot pass and few places to stop. Local chauffeurs drive it daily and know where to pull in, which is the main reason to hire one rather than a self-drive car. Drop-offs in Positano are on the upper road or at hotel entrances, since the lanes down to the beach are pedestrian; in Amalfi, cars stop at the harbour front by Piazza Flavio Gioia.
Alternating plates and summer access rules
ANAS, the road authority, runs an alternating number-plate scheme on the SS163 between Vietri sul Mare and Positano. In 2026 it applies from 1 June to 31 October, from 10:00 to 18:00 on activation days, and daily through August and September. On odd dates, cars with plates ending in an odd digit may drive; on even dates, even digits. The ordinance lists exemptions, among them taxis, buses and vehicles with disability permits. Heavy vehicles and large tourist coaches face separate year-round limits under another ANAS ordinance, so coach groups usually transfer to smaller vehicles or boats. The affiliate plans your vehicle and timing around the calendar in force on your date, and outside 10:00 to 18:00 all vehicles may use the road. Current rules are published by ANAS.
Which vehicle works on the Amalfi road?
A business or Luxury Executive Sedan is the easiest car on the hairpins. An executive SUV or Standard Black SUV carries a family with luggage. Sprinter Vans can run the route but are slower on the narrowest bends and may be limited at certain hotels. Minicoach and motorcoach groups are planned by a coordinator and confirmed in writing, often ending at Salerno or Sorrento with a boat or smaller vehicles for the final leg. See the fleet and rates.
Towns and where the hotels are
- Positano: Le Sirenuse and Il San Pietro di Positano, with the village falling steeply to the Spiaggia Grande.
- Praiano and Conca dei Marini: quieter clifftop hotels, including the Monastero Santa Rosa.
- Amalfi and Atrani: the cathedral town and harbour, the Hotel Santa Caterina on the western approach.
- Ravello: on the ridge above Amalfi, with Villa Rufolo, Villa Cimbrone and the Belmond Hotel Caruso.
- Maiori, Minori, Cetara and Vietri sul Mare: the eastern end towards Salerno, known for beaches, anchovies and ceramics.
Airports: Naples and Salerno
Most visitors land at Naples International; the chauffeur meets you curbside at the pre-arranged pickup area, tracks the flight and waits 60 minutes from landing on international arrivals and 30 on domestic ones. For Positano-bound guests who want a chauffeur waiting in the hall with their name, that greeting is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport, reopened to commercial flights in 2024, is closer to Amalfi and Ravello when your flight uses it. Arriving by sea or rail
Ferries and hydrofoils link Positano and Amalfi with Salerno, Sorrento, Capri and Naples in season, usually from spring to autumn, subject to sea conditions. A chauffeur can meet the boat at Salerno or Naples and drive the rest, or collect you from a coast pier for the airport. Frecciarossa trains stop at Salerno station, about 25 km from Amalfi. - 15 August: the Feast of the Assumption in Positano.

Getting there from Rome or Sorrento
Travellers arriving on a long-haul flight into Rome often prefer a single car all the way to the coast rather than a train to Naples and a second transfer. The route follows the A1 south past Caserta, then the A3 towards Salerno or the Sorrento peninsula, about 270 km to Positano and 3.5 to 4 hours with a stop. Book it as one of our intercity transfers with the fare fixed at booking. From Sorrento, the drive to Positano climbs over the peninsula to join the SS163 at the Colli di San Pietro and usually takes 30 to 50 minutes. Day trips from the coast
With an hourly chauffeur service booking, Pompeii is about 1 hour from Positano over the Sorrento peninsula, Paestum's Greek temples about 1 hour 15 from Amalfi via Salerno, and Sorrento 30 to 50 minutes. Plan these outside the 10:00 to 18:00 window where you can; early departures are quicker on the SS163.
Entry notes for international visitors
The EU Entry/Exit System has run at all Schengen external borders since 10 April 2026, recording a photo and usually fingerprints for non-EU visitors on first entry. ETIAS has not started. Current guidance is on Travel to Europe. Local operators can join the network at register.
