Athens International Airport: layout and pickup
Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is at Spata, in the Mesogeia plain east of the city, about 33 km by road from Syntagma. It has one main terminal building plus a satellite terminal reached by an underground walkway; there is no terminal to guess, because all arrivals come out into the same arrivals level of the main building. Flights from outside Schengen, including the UK, the US and the Middle East, clear passport control first, and queues in July and August can be long.
Standard pickup is curbside at the airport's designated area for pre-arranged vehicles on the arrivals side; the confirmation gives the exact meeting point and the chauffeur's number. How the Attiki Odos works
The Attiki Odos (A6) is the tolled ring motorway that links the airport with the northern suburbs, Elefsina and the western approach to the city. A typical airport to Syntagma transfer uses the Attiki Odos and then Mesogeion or Kifisias Avenue, or runs along Imittou; an airport to Piraeus transfer often stays on the motorway for longer.

Piraeus: cruises, ferries and how to plan a port day
The Port of Piraeus is about 12 km south-west of Syntagma and is both a leading Mediterranean cruise port and the main ferry port for the Aegean islands. Cruise ships use three terminals on the southern side of the port, run by the Piraeus Port Authority: Miaoulis (Terminal A), Themistocles (Terminal B) and Alkimos (Terminal C). Island ferries leave from separate gates spread around the central harbour, and the walk between the wrong gate and the right one can be long, so tell us whether you are sailing on a cruise ship or a ferry and give the gate or terminal if you know it.
Practical timings:
- Piraeus to Syntagma or the Acropolis area: typically 20 to 40 minutes.
- Piraeus to the airport: typically 45 to 60 minutes, longer on summer Saturdays when cruise turnarounds and island ferries coincide.
- Cruise to airport same day: leave a good margin for disembarkation and security.
A popular port-day plan is a set pickup at the terminal, the Acropolis and its museum in the morning, lunch in Plaka and a return to the ship with time to spare. - Summer: peak cruise season at Piraeus and heavy weekend traffic to the coast.
- November: the Athens Marathon, The Authentic, usually on the second Sunday of November, from the town of Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium, with wide road closures.

Planning around the Greek summer
From June to September Athens is hot, often above 35 C in the afternoon, and most visitors combine the city with ferries, cruises and islands. That changes how cars are used. Morning pickups for the Acropolis, which opens early, avoid both the heat and the largest crowds; afternoon hours are better spent in the museum or at the hotel; evenings are for dinner in Kolonaki, Psyrri or on the Riviera.
Island connections need a margin. Ferries to the Cyclades leave from Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio, and the fast boats are punctual: aim to be dropped at the gate 45 to 60 minutes before departure. If you arrive at the airport and continue to an island on the same day, Rafina is usually closer to ATH than Piraeus.
Driving realities in Athens
Greece drives on the right. Traffic is dense on Kifisias and Mesogeion Avenues and on the Kifisos highway at weekday peaks, roughly 07:30 to 10:00 and 14:30 to 17:30, and the coastal avenue towards Glyfada fills on summer weekends. The centre has a traffic ring, the daktylios, which restricts private cars on weekdays through much of the year using odd and even number plates. Around the Acropolis, parts of Plaka are pedestrianised, so drop-offs are made at the nearest permitted point and the chauffeur tells you where the pickup will be. Demonstrations near Syntagma occasionally close roads at short notice, and dispatch reroutes when that happens.
Arriving in Greece: EES and ETIAS
Greece is in the Schengen area. The EU Entry/Exit System, fully running at Schengen external borders since 10 April 2026, registers the fingerprints and facial image of non-EU short-stay visitors on first arrival and then records each entry and exit electronically in place of stamps. Cruise passengers starting or ending in Piraeus from outside Schengen go through the same process.
ETIAS is not operating yet. As of September 2026, the EU has not confirmed when the online authorisation will start, and a transition period is planned after launch. Visa-exempt visitors, including US, Canadian and UK passport holders, can stay up to 90 days in any 180 without it for now. The EU travel portal is the official source.
Corporate accounts, shipping and partners
