Makedonia Airport (SKG) in practice
Thessaloniki Airport "Makedonia" lies on the shore of the Thermaic Gulf about 15 km southeast of the city centre, near Kalamaria and the eastern suburbs. It is operated by Fraport Greece and was rebuilt with an expanded terminal building in recent years. Standard pickup is at the designated pre-arranged pickup area outside the arrivals level, where the chauffeur sends the exact location and car details after landing. The ring road and the waterfront avenues are the pressure points at rush hour, around 8:00 to 9:30 and 14:30 to 16:30 on weekdays. Summer Friday evenings see heavy traffic toward Halkidiki.
Halkidiki resorts: the most requested transfer
Most summer bookings from SKG head straight to the three peninsulas of Halkidiki. Kassandra, the closest, holds large resort complexes and the Sani area; Sithonia is quieter with coves and the Porto Carras estate; Athos is reached as far as Ouranoupoli, where pilgrim boats leave for the monastic peninsula (male visitors only, with a permit). The city: waterfront, Ladadika and business districts
Thessaloniki stretches along the bay from the port to the White Tower and on to Kalamaria. Aristotelous Square opens onto the Nea Paralia promenade; Ladadika by the port is the restaurant quarter; the Upper Town (Ano Poli) climbs to the Byzantine walls. Landmark hotels include the Makedonia Palace on the seafront and the Electra Palace on Aristotelous Square. Offices cluster around Tsimiski and Egnatia streets and in the eastern suburbs toward Pylaia. Helexpo, the exhibition centre by the university, hosts the Thessaloniki International Fair. A day of meetings between the centre and Pylaia works well with hourly chauffeur service.
Port of Thessaloniki and cruise calls
The Port of Thessaloniki sits at the western end of the waterfront, a short walk from Ladadika. Cruise ships use the passenger terminal there, and the port also handles large container and ferry traffic. Chauffeurs collect passengers at the agreed point outside the passenger area and can run a port-call day to Vergina's royal tombs, Pella or Mount Olympus, with timing set around the all-aboard hour. Metro, rail and the road network
The Thessaloniki Metro opened its first line in late 2024, linking the new railway station with the east of the city, but it does not reach the airport. The main railway station has Hellenic Train services to Athens, typically about 4 to 4.5 hours. The Egnatia Odos motorway crosses northern Greece from west to east, and the motorway north toward the border with North Macedonia is tolled. Driving is on the right.
Cross-border trips from Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is a gateway to the Balkans. The Evzonoi crossing into North Macedonia is about 70 km north, with Skopje roughly 230 km and 3 to 3.5 hours away. North Macedonia is outside the EU, so returning to Greece means a Schengen external border, where the Entry/Exit System registers non-EU travellers. Bulgaria has been a full Schengen member since January 2025, so the Promachonas crossing toward Sofia (about 310 km, 4 hours) has no routine passport checks. ETIAS is not operating yet and has no confirmed start date as of September 2026; see the EU travel site.
Who uses the service in Thessaloniki

Changes and cancellations
No charge if you cancel more than 72 hours before pickup. For Thessaloniki bookings the fee is 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show.
