Heraklion International Airport (HER)
Nikos Kazantzakis Airport is about 5 km east of the city centre, on the coast, and is one of the busiest airports in Greece in summer. It has one main terminal for domestic and international flights, and arrivals can be crowded at weekend peaks. The chauffeur waits at the airport's designated pickup area for pre-booked vehicles outside arrivals and messages the meeting point when you land. A chauffeur waiting inside the Heraklion arrivals hall with a name board is an optional add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Flights are tracked. You get 60 minutes of included waiting from actual landing on international flights, 30 minutes on domestic flights from Athens or Thessaloniki, and 15 minutes on other pickups, then 15-minute blocks. A replacement airport at Kastelli, about 40 km south-east, is under construction with opening targeted for 2028; until then all flights use Nikos Kazantzakis. Almost every transfer uses the VOAK, Crete's northern highway along the coast. It is being upgraded in sections, some stretches are still two-lane with junctions and slow vehicles, and summer traffic is heavy. The drive times above allow for that. Heraklion port: cruise ships and ferries
The port lies next to the Venetian harbour and the Koules fortress, 10 minutes from the airport. Cruise ships berth at the passenger terminal quays, and overnight ferries connect Heraklion with Piraeus, as well as seasonal fast ferries to Santorini and other Cyclades. The chauffeur meets you at the vehicle area the Heraklion Port Authority designates for your ship. Knossos and cultural days
The Palace of Knossos, the great Minoan site, is 5 km south of the centre, and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which holds most of its finds, is in the city itself. A half-day covers both. Longer city tours and day trips reach Phaistos in the south (about 60 km), the Lasithi Plateau, or the wine villages of Archanes and Peza. Opening hours and tickets are published by the Greek culture ministry on Odysseus.
Where visitors stay
Central Heraklion hotels cluster around Lions Square (Plateia Eleftherias) and the old harbour, convenient for business at the port, the university hospital or the regional authorities. Most holiday travel heads east: Amoudara west of the city, the resort strip from Hersonissos to Malia, and the luxury hotels and villas of Elounda and Agios Nikolaos on the Gulf of Mirabello. Wedding venues on the cliffs and in the Elounda resorts often book a wedding limousine or a partner-supplied classic.

Luxury resorts and villa arrivals in eastern Crete
The Elounda peninsula and the coast around Agios Nikolaos hold some of the largest luxury resorts in Greece, with private-pool villas and their own jetties. Arrival days are usually Saturdays and Sundays, when hundreds of guests land within a few hours. Booking a fixed-fare car ahead avoids the taxi queue and lets the chauffeur track a delayed charter. Families with young children should add child seats at booking, which are free. For VIP chauffeur service, the desk keeps traveller profiles with the preferred vehicle class. Guests at Spinalonga-facing hotels often book a half-day to Plaka for the boat to the island.
Road conditions on Crete
Greece drives on the right. The VOAK has hard shoulders that slower drivers use to let others pass, which is legal but can surprise visitors. Mountain roads inland are narrow, goats are a real hazard, and summer afternoons bring meltemi winds and dust. There are no motorway tolls on Crete. The fixed fare does not change with the traffic.
Vehicles
A Standard Sedan suits couples heading to Elounda; an executive SUV fits families with luggage; a Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van takes villa groups and wedding parties, and minicoaches carry conference and incentive guests. Onward within Greece
Heraklion to Athens is a 50-minute flight or an overnight ferry to Piraeus; chauffeurs meet you at Athens International. For Rhodes, flights and seasonal ferries connect the islands. Longer island transfers are covered under intercity transfers.
Passport control for non-EU visitors
As a Schengen member, Greece registers non-EU short-stay visitors in the Entry/Exit System at their first external-border entry, so a direct flight from London or Tel Aviv to Heraklion means fingerprints and a photo on arrival. ETIAS pre-travel authorisation is not in force as of September 2026. In peak months allow extra time at the airport's border control.
What happens if you cancel
Cancel more than 72 hours before pickup and nothing is charged. From 72 hours the charge is 10%, from 48 hours 50%, and from 24 hours or on a no-show it is the full fare.
