Italy's biggest station
Roma Termini is the largest and busiest station in Italy, with more than 30 platforms and hundreds of thousands of passengers a day. Frecciarossa and Italo trains arrive from Florence in about 1 hour 30 minutes, from Naples in about 1 hour 10 minutes, from Milan in about 3 hours and from Venice in about 4 hours. Intercity and regional trains serve Umbria, the Castelli Romani, the coast and Civitavecchia. The Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Fiumicino Airport in about 32 minutes, departing from platforms at the far end of the station.
Metro lines A and B cross beneath Termini, and the Piazza dei Cinquecento in front is Rome's largest bus terminal.
Finding your way out
- Piazza dei Cinquecento (front): the long modernist façade and the main hall, with the bus terminal and the main taxi rank.
- Via Marsala (north side): exits near the Leonardo Express and airport-bus platforms, with vehicle access.
- Via Giovanni Giolitti (south side): exits towards Esquilino and the side-street car access.
- Forum Termini: the underground shopping level linking the metro.
The Leonardo Express and some regional trains use platforms well away from the main hall; expect a walk of up to ten minutes to reach the front.
Where cars may legally stop
The standard service is curbside. NCC vehicles may only stop in the designated drop-off and pick-up areas around Termini, usually on the Via Marsala or Via Giolitti sides, or in the station car parks, and never on the taxi rank or among the bus bays of Piazza dei Cinquecento. After you leave the train, the chauffeur sends the exact spot. Keep your bags close in the busy front hall.
A meet at the head of the platform with a name board is offered as meet and greet. Add-ons are only available in selected locations.
The ZTL and the historic centre
Much of central Rome is a ZTL (zona a traffico limitato), a limited-traffic zone controlled by cameras, as set out by Roma Mobilità. Access by NCC vehicles depends on permits and time windows, and some hotels on pedestrian streets can only be reached on foot for the last few metres. Train tracking

Embassies, ministries and hotels
Rome has two diplomatic communities, accredited to Italy and to the Holy See, plus the UN food agencies such as the FAO near the Circus Maximus. Ministries sit around Via XX Settembre, a short drive from Termini, and the EUR district in the south houses corporate headquarters and the convention centre La Nuvola. Termini is a common start for intercity transfers and day trips:

- Positano and the Amalfi Coast, about 275 km, 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours
- Florence, about 275 km, 3 hours
- Montepulciano, about 170 km, 2 hours

Tiburtina, Ostiense and San Pietro
Rome has other stations that may suit you better than Termini. Roma Tiburtina, in the east, is a major Frecciarossa and Italo stop and is quicker for the eastern suburbs and the A24 towards Abruzzo. Roma Ostiense, next to the Pyramid of Cestius, is on the line to Fiumicino and the coast. Roma San Pietro, a short walk from the Vatican, is served by regional trains towards Civitavecchia and Viterbo. If you are leaving your train at one of them, enter it as the pickup.
Big events also shape the traffic: the Rome Marathon usually in March, the international tennis tournament at the Foro Italico usually in May, and papal ceremonies in St. Peter's Square throughout the year.
