A small airport southeast of the city

Ciampino, officially G.B. Pastine, sits about 15 km southeast of central Rome near the Via Appia. Its compact single terminal serves mainly low-cost European flights, and the airfield also hosts government, charter and business aviation. Because it is small, the walk from the aircraft to the exit is short, but queues at passport control can build when several non-Schengen flights land together.

Train and bus options from Ciampino

Ciampino has no rail station at the terminal. Buses run to Ciampino town station, where regional trains reach Roma Termini in about 15 minutes, and coaches go directly to Termini; train times are on Trenitalia. With suitcases, the bus-and-train connection is awkward, which is why many travellers pre-book a car.

Ciampino or Fiumicino?

Fiumicino is Rome's main airport, 30 km west, for long-haul and most full-service flights. Ciampino is closer to the south-eastern districts and the hill towns. Official information for both airports is published by Aeroporti di Roma.

Day trips from Ciampino

Because Ciampino sits on the city's south-eastern edge, it is well placed for trips to the Castelli Romani, Castel Gandolfo and the Alban Hills, and the motorway south toward Naples. Early and late flights

Ciampino has many early morning departures and late evening arrivals on low-cost routes, and public transport is thin at those hours. A pre-booked car avoids waiting for the last coach. For a 06:30 departure from a hotel near the Pantheon, the car usually leaves the hotel around 04:15 to 04:30, allowing for security queues that start early. The airport applies night-time flight restrictions, so the schedule tends to bunch up in the evening.

Roads and driving in Rome

Rome drives on the right. The GRA (Grande Raccordo Anulare) ring road links Ciampino with Fiumicino and the northern suburbs, and it slows heavily at weekday peak hours.
