Road or water: understanding Venice arrivals
Venice is the one major European city where your car cannot take you to the hotel door in the historic centre. The islands have no roads. A car from Marco Polo drops at Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto car park island, where the road ends, and from there you continue on foot, by vaporetto (water bus) or by water taxi. Hotels on the Lido can be reached by car ferry from Tronchetto, but most guests cross by boat.

The airport water dock is a covered walk of roughly 7 to 10 minutes from arrivals. Water taxis and public Alilaguna boats are separate services booked with their operators, not part of a car transfer.

Marco Polo has one passenger terminal, with arrivals on the ground floor. Passport control, EES and customs at Venice
Schengen flights, including most of Europe, arrive without border checks and passengers are usually out within 15 to 25 minutes. Flights from the UK, the US, Canada, the Middle East and Asia pass Italian border control, where non-EU travellers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System at their first entry with fingerprints and a facial photo. Long-haul summer arrivals can bunch together, so allow 30 to 60 minutes to the curb.

Venice Airport sits on the mainland at Tessera, about 13 km by road from Piazzale Roma. From there the motorway network opens up the whole north-east.

- Treviso: 25 to 35 minutes.
- Padua: 35 to 50 minutes.

- Cortina d'Ampezzo: 2 h to 2 h 30, longer in snow.
- Trieste: 1 h 30 to 1 h 45.

Cruise days at Venice
Since 2021 the largest cruise ships no longer sail through the Giudecca Canal past San Marco, so many embarkations use mainland terminals, and some lines embark at other Adriatic ports instead. Your ticket names the terminal; enter it as the drop-off and the chauffeur plans the right approach. Public transport and rail from VCE
There is no train station at Marco Polo. ATVO and ACTV buses link the airport with Piazzale Roma in around 20 to 30 minutes and with Venezia Mestre station, where Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains run to Milan, Florence, Bologna and Rome. Venezia Santa Lucia, the station on the island, is a short walk from Piazzale Roma.
A bus plus the vaporetto is economical for light travellers. With several suitcases, children or a timed check-in, a car to Piazzale Roma plus a pre-arranged porter or water taxi is easier.

Biennale, film festival and Carnival
Three recurring events set the rhythm of Venice travel. Carnival is usually in February. The Biennale di Venezia alternates between art and architecture exhibitions that run for several months from spring to autumn, and the Venice International Film Festival on the Lido is usually held from late August into early September. Dates are published by La Biennale di Venezia. Book well ahead for opening weeks, when hotel check-ins and gala evenings concentrate demand.
