How do Venice cruise transfers work now?
Italy barred large ships from the Giudecca Canal and St Mark's Basin in August 2021, and the cruise map of Venice changed with it. The North Adriatic Sea Port Authority now handles cruise calls in three ways: smaller ships reach the Venezia Marittima passenger terminal on the western edge of the historic city; larger ships have used berths in the mainland industrial port at Marghera and at Fusina; and many big-ship itineraries have moved to Trieste, Ravenna or Monfalcone. Your cruise documents state the berth. Put it, and the ship name, in the booking notes.
The one constant is that Venice is a city of water. Cars can reach the Marittima and the mainland berths, and they can reach Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto at the end of the road bridge, but not the hotels on the Grand Canal. The chauffeur handles the road part; a water taxi covers the rest.
Booking your Venice cruise car
Enter the pickup (Marco Polo, Treviso, a mainland hotel, Piazzale Roma or the ship), the berth, the date and time, and passengers and bags. The terminal operator, Venezia Terminal Passeggeri, runs the Marittima buildings. Lines that sail from Venice in 2026 are mostly small-ship and luxury brands, with larger lines such as MSC Cruises and Costa using mainland berths or nearby Adriatic ports on some itineraries.
Embarkation day
At the Marittima and the mainland berths, the chauffeur stops at the terminal's drop-off lane and porters take tagged luggage. If you are staying on the Grand Canal, the plan is a water taxi from your hotel's landing to Piazzale Roma, where the chauffeur meets you, then 5-10 minutes by road to the Marittima; some water taxis can also run you straight to the terminal quay. Hotels on the Lido or at the Hilton Molino Stucky on Giudecca follow the same pattern.
Disembarkation: pickup at the terminal
Collect your bags, leave through the baggage hall and walk to the ground transportation area outside, where pre-arranged cars wait. That is where the chauffeur meets you, not inside the building. Book for your disembarkation group plus 30-45 minutes. A quarter of an hour of waiting is included at the port, then 15-minute blocks apply.
Marco Polo, Treviso and the ship
Venice Marco Polo lies on the mainland shore of the lagoon, about 13 km from the Marittima by road. Treviso airport, used by some low-cost carriers, is about 35 km and 35-45 minutes away. Every airport pickup is flight-tracked, with 60 minutes of waiting from the actual landing on international arrivals and 30 on domestic ones, and the chauffeur meets you at the airport's designated pickup area. The airport operator lists live flights. For disembarkation-day flights, allow three hours before a European departure and four before long-haul.
If your line moves the ship to Trieste (about 1 h 45 min from Marco Polo) or Ravenna (about 2 h), book the same airport-to-ship transfer to that port; the reservation engine prices it the same way. Bologna is a convenient airport for Ravenna.
Hotels before and after the cruise
Guests who want the lagoon stay in the historic centre and accept a water leg. Guests who prefer door-to-door road access pick Mestre, the airport hotels at Tessera or a villa hotel on the Brenta Riviera, all 15-40 minutes from the berths by car. Port-day tours by road
A car cannot tour the canals, but an hourly chauffeur, three hours minimum, opens up the Veneto: the villas of the Brenta Riviera and Villa Pisani at Stra (30-40 minutes), Padua and the Scrovegni Chapel (about 45 minutes), the Prosecco hills around Valdobbiadene (about 1 h 15 min), or Verona (about 1 h 30 min). The fixed fare includes car, chauffeur, taxes and waiting as above. Water taxis are booked separately. Plans can change: a cancellation made more than 72 hours ahead is free, one made 72 hours or less ahead costs 10 %, 48 hours or less 50 %, and 24 hours or less, or a no-show, 100 %.
