Where do cruise ships dock in Dubrovnik?
Dubrovnik has two very different arrival points, and the chauffeur needs to know which one is yours.
- Gruz harbour (Port of Dubrovnik). The main cruise quays and passenger terminal are in the Gruz bay, about 3 km by road north-west of the walled city, near the Franjo Tudman bridge. Larger ships berth alongside here.
- Tender landing at the old harbour. Ships at anchor off Lokrum or the city walls tender passengers to the old port beside the Ploce side of the Old Town. Cars cannot reach the quay inside the walls; the nearest drop-off is at the Ploce Gate or the Pile Gate, a short walk away.
The Dubrovnik Port Authority publishes the arrivals schedule. The city works with the cruise industry to cap how many ships and passengers arrive on a single day, so calls are spread out and the Gruz kerb is rarely chaotic by Mediterranean standards.
Is Dubrovnik a turnaround port or a port of call?
Mostly a port of call. Large ships from lines such as MSC Cruises, Celebrity, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Viking stop for the day on Adriatic and eastern Mediterranean itineraries. Smaller ships, yachts and expedition-style lines also begin and end Croatian coastal cruises here, which is when airport-to-ship and ship-to-airport transfers matter most.
Embarkation at Gruz: drop-off and luggage
On a turnaround day the chauffeur drives into the port area and stops at the terminal forecourt used by taxis and pre-arranged vehicles. Port staff direct cars to the correct quay. Hand tagged suitcases to the line's porters at the kerb and keep passports, medication and a change of clothes in your hand luggage, because cases can take a few hours to reach the cabin.
Small ships often board in a tight window. Turning up early in that window keeps the queue short. From Lapad or Babin Kuk the drive is 5-10 minutes; from a hotel beside the Old Town, allow 15-20 minutes in summer, when the one road past Pile Gate slows to a crawl in the late morning.
Disembarkation morning: finding your car
After a cruise ends in Dubrovnik, the chauffeur waits in the pickup area outside the terminal building at Gruz, not inside it. Guests usually leave between about 07:30 and 10:00, depending on the line and your luggage colour or group. Book for your group time plus 30 minutes. The pickup includes 15 minutes of waiting from the booked time, then 15-minute blocks, so an honest time saves money.

Dubrovnik Airport to the ship, and back
Dubrovnik Airport is at Cilipi, about 20 km south-east of the Old Town and roughly 23-25 km from Gruz. The coast road is scenic, narrow in places and slow in July and August.

Every airport pickup is flight-tracked, and the chauffeur waits 60 minutes free after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one. Pre-cruise and post-cruise hotels
Hotels on the Lapad peninsula and Babin Kuk are closest to Gruz and quieter at night. The Excelsior and Villa Dubrovnik sit on the Ploce side with views of the walls, and the Hilton Imperial is steps from Pile Gate. Cavtat, near the airport, suits a last night before an early flight. A transfer between hotel and ship is priced like any other point-to-point trip.
Port-day private tours from Gruz
A port day in Dubrovnik is short, and the Old Town is crowded by mid-morning. An hourly chauffeur, three hours minimum, lets you choose a different order.
- Walls first. Drop-off at Pile Gate at opening time, walk the walls, then the car collects you at Ploce for the cable car or the Srd road viewpoint.
- Ston and Peljesac. About an hour north-west: the medieval walls of Ston, oyster farms at Mali Ston and a winery stop on the peninsula.
- Cavtat and Konavle. A slower half day south towards the airport, with lunch in Cavtat's harbour.
- Bay of Kotor. A full day into Montenegro. Croatia is in the Schengen area and Montenegro is not, so carry passports and allow time at the border in both directions.
