Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) at Čilipi
The airport is about 20 km southeast of the Old Town, above the Konavle valley, and the drive along the coast road typically takes 25 to 40 minutes. It has one passenger terminal, very busy from May to October and quieter in winter. Standard pickup is at the designated pre-arranged transfer area outside arrivals; the chauffeur messages the exact bay and car on landing. Meeting you in the Čilipi arrivals hall with a name board is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. Dubrovnik Airport publishes current terminal details.

Gruž cruise port and ship-day logistics
Cruise ships berth at the Port of Dubrovnik in Gruž, about 3 to 4 km northwest of the Old Town, or anchor off the city and tender passengers ashore. To manage crowds, the city and the port limit cruise calls, working to a cap of about two ships a day and minimum stays, which spreads passengers through the day. Your chauffeur meets you at the agreed point outside the terminal and drives the short hop to the Pile Gate area or out to Ston, Cavtat or Konavle, with the return timed to all-aboard. Getting to the Old Town: traffic limits and drop points
The walled Old Town is pedestrian only. The approaches are tightly managed: coaches must book paid time slots to stop near the Pile Gate, and the city restricts vehicle access and stopping in the zone around the gates in peak season. A private car stops at the nearest permitted point near Pile Gate or Ploče Gate, and the last stretch is on foot, including to hotels and apartments inside the walls. Luggage for an Old Town rental is carried from the drop point, so pack for cobbles and steps. Expect slow traffic on the Pile road between 9:00 and 13:00 on multi-ship days.

- Ploče and Sveti Jakov, east of the walls: Hotel Excelsior and Villa Dubrovnik, with views back to the Old Town.
- Pile, just outside the western gate: the Hilton Imperial.
- Lapad and Babin Kuk, the peninsula west of Gruž: most large resort hotels.
- Cavtat, 20 km south near the airport: a quieter harbour town with resort hotels.

Split and Kotor: the two big road trips
The Pelješac Bridge, opened in 2022, lets the coast road to Split stay inside Croatia and skip the short stretch through Neum in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which used to mean two border checks. The trip to Kotor does cross a border: Karasovići on the Croatian side and Debeli Brijeg on the Montenegrin side. Montenegro is outside the EU and Schengen, so this is an external Schengen border. In July and August queues there can reach two hours or more, especially from late morning, so early departures are best. Intercity transfers covers one-way and return pricing.
Croatia in Schengen: arrival formalities in 2026
Croatia joined the Schengen area and adopted the euro on 1 January 2023. Flights into Čilipi from other Schengen countries arrive without passport control. Non-EU travellers arriving from outside Schengen, for example from London, go through the EU Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026, which records fingerprints and a facial image on the first entry. The same applies at Karasovići when you come back from Montenegro. ETIAS, the travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, is not yet running and has no confirmed launch date as of September 2026; check the EU travel site before you fly.
Events and season
- May to October: the main cruise and tourist season.
- 10 July to 25 August (usually): the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, with theatre and concerts in the Old Town and fortresses.
- 3 February: the Feast of St Blaise, the city's patron saint.
- December: the Winter Festival with markets along the Stradun.
Vehicles for Dubrovnik roads
A Standard Sedan fits most couples. An executive SUV handles the Konavle and Pelješac roads comfortably with luggage. Yachts, weddings and private aviation
Dubrovnik's marina at Komolac (ACI Dubrovnik), up the Rijeka Dubrovačka inlet, and the anchorage off the Old Town see steady superyacht traffic in summer. Crew changes and guest arrivals are coordinated with the captain or agent so cars meet tenders at the right quay. Private jets use the general aviation side of Čilipi; our private aviation desk arranges the car where the handler allows it. Wedding days at the fortresses, on Lokrum or in Konavle villages are timed by a coordinator around ceremony and photo schedules.
Driving in and around Dubrovnik
Traffic drives on the right. The coast road (D8) is the only main artery, winding and narrow in places, and the city streets above the Old Town are steep with little parking. Road works are scheduled outside the high season where possible, and summer queues are longest near Pile and on the approach to Gruž.
