The Mersey crossings and local roads
Two road tunnels run under the Mersey to Birkenhead and Wallasey: the Queensway (Birkenhead) Tunnel and the Kingsway (Wallasey) Tunnel. Both charge a toll, as does the Mersey Gateway Bridge further upriver between Runcorn and Widnes, which is cashless. Liverpool has no Clean Air Zone charge. Match days and race days
- Grand National, usually in April: three days at Aintree, north of the city. Traffic is managed with closures and one-way routes; the car drops at an agreed point and collects you from a named spot after the last race. Book early. Dates are on the Aintree site.
- Premier League football, August to May: Liverpool FC at Anfield and Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock, which opened in 2025. Road closures ring both grounds, so collection points are agreed in advance.
- Late August: International Beatleweek fills city-centre hotels.
- Concerts and conferences: at the arena and convention centre on Kings Dock, a short walk from the Albert Dock.

Where people stay and work
The Commercial District around Old Hall Street and Castle Street holds the insurers, shipping firms and law offices. The Albert Dock and the Royal Albert Dock hold hotels and museums; the Georgian Quarter and Hope Street sit uphill by the two cathedrals; the Baltic Triangle and Ropewalks are the creative and nightlife areas. Trains
Liverpool Lime Street is the main station, with Avanti West Coast services to London Euston in about 2 hours 15 minutes and fast trains to Manchester in 35 to 50 minutes. Liverpool South Parkway, near the airport, is a change point for Merseyrail and national services. Many business travellers arriving at London Euston with heavy luggage book a car at one end. UK entry for international arrivals
Travellers who do not need a UK visa, such as US, Canadian and EU citizens, must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation before travel. From 8 April 2026 it costs £20, allows repeated visits of up to six months, and lasts two years or until the passport expires.
