How do you book a chauffeur in Southampton?

Use the reservation engine on this page or open book. The five cruise terminals and where your car meets you

The Port of Southampton, run by Associated British Ports, is the busiest cruise port in the UK and turns round ships at five terminals split between two dock estates. Knowing which one you are sailing from matters, because the Eastern and Western Docks use different gates and the walk between them is not practical with luggage.

On embarkation day your chauffeur drives into the terminal's drop-off lane, where porters take checked bags before you walk in to check-in. On disembarkation morning, pickup is at the terminal's designated coach and car area once you have collected your cases from the baggage hall. Ships usually arrive early in the morning and passengers leave in timed groups, so we set the pickup from the disembarkation time on your cruise documents and track the ship's arrival. The 15-minute included wait applies from the booked time; if your group is called late, the chauffeur waits and extra time is billed in 15-minute blocks rather than you being left at the kerb.

A name-board meet in the baggage hall is an add-on. Add-ons are only available in selected locations, and the booking engine shows whether it can be added for your terminal and sailing.

Southampton to Heathrow: timing a cruise and a flight

The most common booking we take in Southampton is the run between a cruise terminal and Heathrow. It is about 70 miles by the M3 and the M25, and typically takes 75 to 110 minutes, longer on Friday afternoons and around the M25 junctions near Heathrow. Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 all have designated drop-off areas, and on arrival the pickup is curbside at the terminal's pre-booked car area rather than inside the arrivals hall.

For disembarkation, most travellers leave four to five hours between the ship's scheduled arrival and a long-haul departure from Heathrow. That covers a late disembarkation call, baggage reclaim, the drive and the airline's check-in cut-off. For embarkation, a flight that lands at Heathrow in the morning works well for an afternoon sailing: the 60-minute included wait starts at actual landing, and the chauffeur follows your flight if it is delayed. Heathrow sits inside London's Ultra Low Emission Zone, and airport drop-off charges apply at every terminal forecourt; the drop-off charge is in the fixed fare, and any ULEZ charge would be billed at actual cost and added to the booking.

Southampton to Gatwick, London City and the other airports

Gatwick is about 80 miles away, either east along the M27 and A27 coast road or by the M3, M25 and M23. Allow 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes depending on the route the chauffeur takes on the day. North and South Terminals are about two minutes apart by shuttle, so tell us which one your airline uses.

Arriving in the UK: ETA, passports and cruise passengers

The UK now runs its Electronic Travel Authorisation scheme for visitors who do not need a visa. Nationals of the United States, Canada, Australia, EU countries and most other visa-free countries must hold an ETA before travelling to the UK, whether they arrive by air or by sea. Since 8 April 2026 an ETA costs £20; it is linked digitally to your passport and is valid for multiple trips over two years or until the passport expires. Irish citizens do not need one. Apply through the official UK government ETA service, not through third-party sites that add fees.

Cruise season runs all year here but peaks from spring to autumn, with several ships often turning round on the same weekend day. Other dates to plan around, by month:

• May to September: the main cruise season and summer weekends on the M3 and M27.
• July: the Festival of Speed at Goodwood, about 45 minutes east.
• Late July or early August: Cowes Week sailing regatta on the Isle of Wight, with heavy traffic to the Red Funnel terminal at Town Quay.
• September: the Southampton International Boat Show at Mayflower Park, usually over ten days; and the Goodwood Revival.
• Winter: world cruise departures, typically in January, with long luggage-heavy transfers.

Driving in and around Southampton

The UK drives on the left. The M3 links Southampton with the M25 and London; the M27 runs east to Portsmouth and west towards the New Forest and Bournemouth. The Western Docks are reached from the A33 and the Eastern Docks from the city centre, and dock gate queues on busy turnaround days are the most common delay. Southampton does not run a charging clean air zone for cars, but inside Greater London the ULEZ applies to every borough, and central London has the Congestion Charge; any such charge on your route is billed at actual cost and added to your booking.
