The five cruise terminals
Associated British Ports runs the port, which is the UK's main cruise base. Cunard and P&O Cruises are based here, and many other lines run seasonal sailings to Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Canaries, the Caribbean and New York. The terminals sit in two dock areas with separate dock gates, so the terminal name matters.

The M3 from Heathrow and London, and the M27 along the south coast, are the main routes. Friday afternoons and summer Saturdays, the busiest turnaround days, are slower.
Embarkation day at the terminal
Aim for the arrival slot your cruise line sends with your tickets. The chauffeur drives through the dock gate for your terminal to the passenger drop-off lane, where porters take checked cases for delivery to your cabin. Keep passports, medication and valuables in hand luggage. Most lines close check-in about 60 to 90 minutes before sailing.
Disembarkation and pickup
Ships arrive early in the morning and passengers leave by colour or number group, then collect bags in the baggage hall. There are no customs formalities for most sailings that stay within the Common Travel Area, but voyages from outside it may involve Border Force checks. Exit to the pick-up area the terminal sets aside for pre-booked cars and message the chauffeur. Book for your group's expected release time: 15 minutes of waiting from the booked time are included, then 15-minute blocks.
Ship to Heathrow or Gatwick
For a flight on disembarkation day, choose a Heathrow departure after about 13:00 or a Gatwick departure after about 14:00 to allow for the group release, the drive and airport check-in. Arriving by air before a cruise, add your flight number: the chauffeur is timed to the landing, with 60 minutes of waiting on international arrivals and 30 on domestic flights. The standard pickup is at the airport's designated area for pre-booked cars; a name-board meet in arrivals is an add-on only in selected locations. Which vehicle suits a Southampton sailing?
Two-week voyages mean big cases and formal wear, so choose by luggage:

Hotels near Town Quay and Ocean Village are minutes from the Eastern Docks, and several city centre hotels sit close to the Western Docks. Many passengers stay in London and take a morning transfer, or break the journey in Winchester. Tours on the way to or from the ship
An hourly booking, minimum 3 hours, turns the transfer into a day out with the luggage in the vehicle. Stonehenge is about 40 miles from the port, 55 to 75 minutes; Salisbury Cathedral and Winchester Cathedral are both close to the route; the New Forest lies just west of the docks; and Highclere Castle is about an hour north.
Coming by train
Southampton Central station has direct trains from London Waterloo in about 80 minutes. If you arrive by rail, a short transfer from the station to your terminal is the simplest option with cruise luggage. For longer intercity transfers from other parts of the UK, a door-to-door car avoids changes with heavy bags.
