Stavanger Airport Sola (SVG) and the heliport
Sola is about 14 km south-west of the centre, 20 to 25 minutes by car, and 10 to 15 minutes from Forus. The passenger terminal handles domestic, European and some long-haul charter flights; the chauffeur waits at the airport's designated area for pre-booked vehicles outside arrivals. A meet and greet with a name board in the hall is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Sola is also one of the main bases for helicopter flights to North Sea installations, with the offshore heliport operated alongside the airport. Cruise calls on Vågen
Stavanger's cruise quays are in Vågen, the inner harbour in the middle of town. Strandkaien takes most large ships, beside Old Stavanger's white wooden houses; Skagenkaien on the eastern side and Skansekaien by the Norwegian Petroleum Museum take smaller vessels. Tolls and roads in the region
Norway drives on the right. The Nord-Jæren toll ring charges vehicles automatically at points around Stavanger, Sandnes and Sola, with higher rush-hour rates, and the Ryfast tunnels carry their own toll. The E39 north to Haugesund and Bergen still depends on ferries until the Rogfast tunnel is finished, which is not expected until the 2030s. Ferry crossings on the route you book are in the fixed fare. The Forus roundabouts and the E39 between Stavanger and Sandnes are slow between 07:00 and 08:30 and from 15:00 to 16:30.
Neighbourhoods and hotels
The centre sits around Vågen, with Old Stavanger on the west side and Øvre Holmegate's painted street on the east. Business hotels include the Clarion Hotel Energy at Forus and the waterfront hotels in town, while Stavanger Forum near the stadium hosts exhibitions and ONS. Viking FK plays at SR-Bank Arena in Jåttåvågen. The Petroleum Museum on the harbour is worth an hour for visiting engineers.
Routes beyond the region
Bergen is about 210 km with two ferries, usually 4 h 30 min to 5 h 15 min. Oslo is about 550 km on the E39 and E18 along the south coast, a long day of 7 to 8 hours, so most travellers fly and book a car at Oslo Gardermoen. Arrival formalities
Norway is part of Schengen. Non-EU short-stay visitors are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System on first entry to the area, so a direct international flight into Sola, or a connection via Amsterdam or Copenhagen, includes that biometric check. ETIAS is not yet required. Offshore workers should carry the documents their employer specifies for the installation.
