Oslo Airport Gardermoen: the drive and the pickup
Oslo Airport, Gardermoen is run by the state airport company Avinor and lies about 47 km north-east of the city centre, in Ullensaker. It is a single terminal building with separate piers for domestic, Schengen and non-Schengen flights, and one arrivals hall on the ground floor. The drive into Oslo follows the E6 motorway south, usually 40 to 55 minutes to the centre, and closer to 70 minutes at the afternoon peak or in heavy snow. Fornebu and Lysaker in the west add 10 to 20 minutes. The airport express train reaches Oslo S in roughly 20 minutes, so a car makes the most sense for door-to-door trips, heavy luggage, families, or anyone heading to Holmenkollen, Bygdoy or the western suburbs rather than the central station.
Two other airports serve the region. Sandefjord Airport Torp (TRF), used by some low-cost and charter flights, is about 110 km south-west, typically 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes by car.
The toll ring (bompenger) explained
Oslo is ringed by automatic toll points collected under the AutoPASS system and operated locally by Fjellinjen. There are no booths: cameras read the number plate as the car passes, and charges differ by time of day, with higher rates at weekday rush hours, and by fuel type, with lower rates for electric vehicles. On a Gardermoen transfer, the car passes toll points on the E6 corridor and again at the city ring; a trip across town can pass several more.

Winter driving and other local realities
Traffic keeps to the right, and dipped headlights are required at all times. From roughly November to April, Norwegian roads can be icy, and winter tyres are standard equipment; affiliate operators drive local conditions every day. Heavy snowfall slows the E6 and the hills around Holmenkollen, so allow extra time for morning flights in January and February. The centre has pedestrianised streets around Karl Johans gate and restricted zones in parts of Kvadraturen, so chauffeurs sometimes meet you on the nearest open street. Where business happens in Oslo
The waterfront has been rebuilt over the past two decades. Bjorvika, beside the Opera House and the Munch museum, holds the Barcode towers of banks, law firms and consultancies. Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen, on the western side of the harbour, mix offices, apartments and restaurants around the Astrup Fearnley Museum. West of the city, Fornebu, on the site of the old airport, and Lysaker host technology and energy companies. Nydalen in the north is a media and technology cluster, and Skoyen has grown into another office hub. The government quarter and the Storting, Norway's parliament, sit on the edge of the old centre, which is why many diplomatic visits start at the Grand Hotel or the Hotel Continental across the street.
Between the city and the airport, Nova Spektrum in Lillestrom is Norway's largest exhibition and conference centre, about 20 km from central Oslo and close to the E6, a useful stop on the way to or from Gardermoen. Hotels, residences and neighbourhoods

Oslo S and rail connections
Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) is the hub for the airport express train, regional trains and the long-distance lines to Bergen, Trondheim and Gothenburg. Its drop-off area faces Jernbanetorget and the Opera side; tell us which exit you are using and the chauffeur will be there. A door-to-door car often beats a change of trains for trips to the fjord towns and ski areas.

Entry rules: Schengen, not EU
Norway is not a member of the European Union, but it is part of the Schengen area. That has two consequences for arrivals. Passport control happens only on flights from outside Schengen, such as the UK, the United States or the Gulf, and since 10 April 2026 those passengers who are not EU, EEA or Swiss nationals register under the Entry/Exit System (EES), which Norway applies at its Schengen external borders. ETIAS, the pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, has not launched yet and will apply to Norway too when it does; see the EU's ETIAS page. Customs is different: Norway is outside the EU customs union, so even passengers on flights from EU countries pass through Norwegian customs, and duty-free limits on alcohol and tobacco are strict.
