Which vehicle should you book in Lisbon?
Lisbon is hilly, the historic quarters have narrow lanes and tram rails, and parts of Alfama and Bairro Alto are closed to most vehicles. A compact footprint helps in the centre, while cruise passengers with several large cases need cargo room. A short guide to the fleet:

Driving in Lisbon: what to expect
Portugal drives on the right. Lisbon's traffic peaks roughly 08:00 to 10:00 and 17:30 to 19:30, and the 2ª Circular and the IC19 from Sintra are the usual pinch points. The historic centre has a low-emission zone and several access-restricted streets, and trams share the road in Baixa, Graça and Estrela. Drop-offs on the steepest lanes are often made at the nearest point a car can stop safely, with the chauffeur walking bags the last few metres when needed. Tolls on Portuguese motorways are largely collected electronically.
Arriving in Portugal: EES and ETIAS in 2026
Portugal is in the Schengen area. Since 10 April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully in place at Schengen external borders, so non-EU visitors on a short stay register fingerprints and a facial image at their first entry, usually at a self-service kiosk before the passport desk, and are then recorded electronically each time they cross. The first registration takes longer than later trips.
ETIAS, the online travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, is not yet operating. The EU has not confirmed a start date, and when it does launch a transition period is planned before it becomes a boarding requirement. Until then, visa-exempt travellers such as US, Canadian and UK citizens enter as before, for up to 90 days in any 180. Portuguese border rules follow the EU travel portal, so check it in the week you fly to Lisbon.
