Madeira Airport (FNC): terminal, pickup and drive to Funchal
Madeira's main airport, officially Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport, sits on the east coast at Santa Cruz, about 16 to 18 km from central Funchal. It has one passenger terminal. Your chauffeur waits at the designated pickup area for pre-booked cars outside arrivals and sends the vehicle details once you land. The runway is famous for being built partly on columns over the sea, and strong crosswinds sometimes delay or divert flights, occasionally to Porto Santo, Lisbon or the Canaries. Port of Funchal: cruise ship pickups
Cruise ships berth at the Pontinha pier, the long breakwater at the western end of the harbour below the Fortaleza de São José. The port is run by the regional port authority APRAM. Passengers walk or ride the pier shuttle to the landside exit, where the chauffeur meets them at the agreed point; the old town, the cable car to Monte and the Mercado dos Lavradores are 5 to 10 minutes away by car. Why distances on Madeira take longer than they look
Madeira is a volcanic island with ridges over 1,800 m high. The VR1 expressway and its long tunnels have cut journey times sharply, but the last kilometres to viewpoints, levada walks and hillside quintas are often steep, narrow and full of hairpin bends. Mountain roads can close in fog, heavy rain or after rockfalls, and the summit road to Pico do Arieiro is cold and cloudy even in summer. Portugal drives on the right. Funchal districts and hotels
Most visitors stay in one of three areas: the Lido and Estrada Monumental hotel strip west of the centre; the harbour front and old town (Zona Velha) with Rua de Santa Maria; or the hills above the city around Monte and Palheiro. - April or May, after Easter: the Flower Festival, with the flower wall and parade on Avenida Arriaga.
- June: the Atlantic Festival, with fireworks over the bay on Saturday nights.
- Late August and September: the Madeira Wine Festival in Funchal and Estreito de Câmara de Lobos.
- December: Christmas lights, then the New Year's Eve fireworks, when many cruise ships anchor off Funchal and roads close near the waterfront.

Porto Santo and connecting via Lisbon
The neighbouring island of Porto Santo is reached by a short flight or by the ferry from Funchal harbour, a crossing of roughly two and a quarter hours. Many long-haul visitors connect through Lisbon Airport, so a combined booking, with a car in Lisbon or Cascais on the way home, is a common pattern.
Arrival formalities: EES and ETIAS
Flights from Lisbon, Porto and other Schengen airports land as domestic-style arrivals with no passport check. Direct flights from the UK and other non-Schengen countries go through border control, where non-EU travellers now register under the EU Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026. ETIAS, the online authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, has not launched yet; check the EU travel portal before you fly.
