Faro Airport: terminal and pickup
Faro Airport, officially Gago Coutinho, sits on the edge of the Ria Formosa lagoon about 7 km west of Faro city. It has a single passenger terminal, and in summer it handles a very high volume of flights from the UK, Ireland and northern Europe. UK, US and Canadian travellers are non-EU visitors in Portugal. Since the EU Entry/Exit System became fully operational on 10 April 2026, they register fingerprints and a facial image at their first Schengen entry instead of receiving a stamp, and queues at FAO can be long on summer Saturdays when many UK flights land together. The longer international waiting allowance exists for exactly that reason. Travellers can ignore ETIAS for now: it has not launched and has no set date.

The A22 and Portugal's electronic tolls
The A22, known as the Via do Infante, runs the length of the Algarve from the Spanish border near Castro Marim to Lagos, and it is the main road for airport transfers. From 2011 it was tolled electronically, with gantries and no toll booths, which caught out many visitors in rental cars. Those tolls were abolished from 1 January 2025, so the A22 is now free to use. The A2 motorway north to Lisbon is still tolled, with conventional toll plazas and electronic Via Verde lanes, and the crossing into Spain on the Guadiana bridge leads to the Spanish A-49 towards Seville.
Golden triangle, Vilamoura and the western Algarve
Many travellers from FAO head for the so-called golden triangle between Almancil, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, a short drive from the airport, with private villas, golf and resorts such as the Conrad Algarve. Vilamoura has the marina, a casino and several championship courses. Albufeira offers the Pine Cliffs resort on its clifftops and a lively old town. West of Portimão, Carvoeiro, Lagos and Sagres have a quieter, more rugged coast. Villas are often reached by rural lanes, so a sedan or SUV is usually the right choice rather than a large van.
Faro itself
Faro is the Algarve's capital and a working city as well as a gateway. The walled Cidade Velha is entered through the Arco da Vila and holds the cathedral, whose tower looks over the Ria Formosa lagoon; boats leave from the harbour for the barrier islands. The Estádio Algarve, between Faro and Loulé, hosts football and big concerts, and the University of the Algarve has campuses at Gambelas and Penha. Loulé, 15 minutes inland, is known for its covered market and the MED world music festival, usually in late June or early July.
When the Algarve is busiest
- Easter to October: the main holiday season, peaking in July and August, when FAO runs at full capacity.
- Spring and autumn: the golf high seasons, with frequent group transfers to Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago.
- July: the international motorcycle rally held near Faro draws large crowds and fills the roads.
- Year-round: motor sport and track days at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve near Portimão.

Train travel from Faro
Faro station, beside the marina, is the terminus for Portugal's CP intercity and Alfa Pendular trains to Lisbon, typically 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours, and for regional trains along the Algarve line. Chauffeurs meet rail passengers at the station front. Timetables are on CP. A car is often quicker to Lisbon than the train once connections are included.
Driving in Portugal
Traffic drives on the right. Apart from the A22, the other main road is the EN125, a slower coastal route through towns and roundabouts that is often congested in summer. Speed cameras are frequent on both roads. In old centres such as Faro, Lagos and Tavira, streets are narrow and some are pedestrian-only, so set-down may be at the edge of the historic quarter.
Choosing a vehicle

One-way intercity transfers go to Lisbon, with its airport about three hours away, to Seville across the Spanish border, and on to Porto for a long road day.
