Joze Pucnik Airport at Brnik
Ljubljana's airport is not in the city: it sits at Brnik, about 26 km north, below the Kamnik Alps. It is operated by Fraport Slovenija, and a new passenger terminal opened in 2021 next to the old building. Pickup is curbside at the designated pre-arranged pickup area in front of Arrivals, with the vehicle and plate sent by message. Meet and greet inside the hall with a name board is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. Waiting included: 60 minutes after actual landing on international flights, 15 minutes on other pickups, then 15-minute blocks. The drive to the centre takes about 25 to 35 minutes on the A2 motorway. Many travellers to Ljubljana also land at Venice, Zagreb or Vienna and drive in; those runs are priced the same way. Slovenia's borders and EES in 2026
Slovenia is in the EU and Schengen, and so are all its neighbours: Italy, Austria, Hungary and, since 2023, Croatia. Flights from Schengen airports arrive without passport control. Non-EU travellers arriving on a flight from outside the area are registered in the Entry/Exit System (EES); ETIAS has not launched. Slovenia and Italy have at times reintroduced temporary checks at internal borders, so carry a passport or national ID on the drive to Venice or Trieste even though you will usually drive straight through.
Ljubljana to Venice by chauffeur
The run to Venice is the most booked long transfer from Ljubljana. The usual route is the A1 motorway south-west past Postojna to the Italian border near Trieste, then the Italian A4 motorway to Mestre. Allow about 240 km and 2.5 to 3 hours. Two details matter on arrival:
- Cars cannot enter historic Venice. The chauffeur drops at Piazzale Roma, the Tronchetto car park, the cruise terminal, or at your hotel if it is on the Lido or the mainland.
- For flights, the drop is Venice Marco Polo Airport, about 2.5 hours from Ljubljana; for ships, the Port of Venice; for trains, Venezia Santa Lucia via Piazzale Roma.
Italian motorway tolls are collected at booths on the A4. A stop in Trieste or at a Collio wine estate can be added when you book.

Getting around a car-free centre
The old town around Preseren Square, the Triple Bridge and the riverbanks of the Ljubljanica has been closed to general traffic since 2008, so no car can pull up at a door inside that zone. The chauffeur drops you at the edge, on Slovenska cesta, at a hotel with vehicle access or at the nearest permitted stopping point, and tells you the walk. Beyond the centre, business addresses cluster along Dunajska cesta to the north, in the BTC City shopping and office area in the east and in the Technology Park. The ring road carries through traffic and is part of the vignette network.
Hotels, congress venues and events
Regular drop-offs include the Grand Hotel Union and Vander Urbani in the centre and the InterContinental Ljubljana on Slovenska cesta. Conferences meet at Cankarjev dom, the national cultural and congress centre, and at the Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre. The Stozice arena and stadium north of the centre host basketball, football and concerts.
- June to September: the Ljubljana Festival, with open-air concerts in the Krizanke venue.
- Late October: the Ljubljana Marathon closes central streets for a morning.
- December: the Christmas markets along the river and on Congress Square.

Vignettes and Slovenian road rules
Cars on Slovenian motorways and expressways need an e-vignette, registered to the number plate; the DARS e-vignette site sets out the rules. The Karawanks tunnel into Austria has its own toll on top. Traffic keeps right, dipped headlights are always on, and winter equipment is compulsory from mid-November to mid-March. All road charges on your route are part of the fare.
Choosing a vehicle
A Standard Sedan is enough for an airport run. For Bled or the Soca valley with luggage, or winter trips over the Karawanks, book an executive SUV. Families with ski equipment and small groups travel in a Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van, and a wedding at Bled or a vineyard can use a partner Rolls-Royce, Maybach, Bentley or stretch limousine. Minicoaches and motorcoaches suit conference groups at Cankarjev dom. Every vehicle is four model years old or younger, except the three luxury marques at up to seven. Private jets and the Slovenian coast
Business jets land at Brnik on the general aviation side, and smaller aircraft also use Portoroz airport on the coast near Piran.
