Galeao terminals
Galeao sits on Ilha do Governador in Guanabara Bay, about 20 km north of Centro. It has two terminals joined by a walkway. Terminal 2 handles almost all international flights and many domestic services; Terminal 1 carries a share of domestic traffic. The chauffeur positions at the terminal shown in your flight record. Rio's second airport, Santos Dumont (SDU), is in Centro and serves domestic routes including the shuttle to Sao Paulo; check which airport your ticket shows before you book.
Pickup: where to find your car
The standard service is a pickup at the designated area for pre-arranged vehicles on the arrivals side of your terminal. When you leave customs, contact the chauffeur with the phone number in your confirmation; they guide you to the car, which waits outside rather than in the arrivals hall. How long do immigration and customs take at GIG?

Rail and bus options from the airport
Galeao has no rail link. The BRT TransCarioca bus corridor runs from the airport toward Barra da Tijuca, with connections to Metro Line 2 on the way, and express airport buses serve Centro and the South Zone. Carnival, New Year and other peak dates
Rio Carnival, usually in February or early March, is the busiest period of the year, with road closures around the Sambadrome and the South Zone. New Year's Eve on Copacabana closes Avenida Atlantica to traffic, so drop-offs move to side streets. Rock in Rio, held in some years in September in Barra, and major football at the Maracana also fill the roads. Book cars well ahead.
Cruise passengers and Pier Maua

Getting back to Galeao
Leave Ipanema or Leblon about three and a half hours before an international departure at busy times and three hours late at night. From Barra da Tijuca, allow a little more for the Linha Amarela. Enter Terminal 2 as the drop-off for most international flights. On match days at the Maracana and during Carnival, the Linha Vermelha can slow sharply, so build in another 30 minutes.
Travelling safely around Rio
