Pier Maua and the port district
Pier Maua is the passenger terminal of Rio's port, on Guanabara Bay beside Praca Maua. The area was rebuilt for the 2016 Olympics as Porto Maravilha, with the Museum of Tomorrow and the Rio Art Museum steps from the pier and the VLT light rail along the waterfront. The terminal handles several ships at once. Drop-off and pickup at the terminal
Cars drop passengers at the terminal forecourt, where porters take checked bags. After a cruise, passengers clear Brazilian immigration where it applies, collect cases in the baggage hall and exit to the area set aside for taxis and pre-booked vehicles. Book for your group's release time; 15 minutes of waiting from the booked time are included, and after that it is billed in 15-minute blocks. Galeao or Santos Dumont?
International flights use Galeao, on Ilha do Governador. Santos Dumont, on the bay close to the city centre, mostly handles domestic routes such as the Sao Paulo shuttle. For a flight home after the cruise, plan on an evening Galeao departure. Add the flight number to an airport pickup: arrivals are tracked, with 60 minutes of waiting on international flights and 30 on domestic ones. Keeping valuables safe on a Rio day
Rio rewards visitors who travel light. Carry a copy of your passport rather than the original, leave jewellery and expensive watches on the ship, and keep phones out of sight on the beach promenades and in crowds at the viewpoints.
