Two levels, two directions
Opened in 2006, Berlin Hauptbahnhof is a crossing station rather than a terminus. East-west trains, including the S-Bahn lines S3, S5, S7 and S9 and many regional and long-distance services, run on the raised upper level under the glass roof. North-south long-distance trains run on the lower level, about 15 metres below the street. Escalators, lifts and a large central atrium connect the levels; allow 5-10 minutes from a lower-level platform to the street with luggage.
ICE trains reach Hamburg in about 1 hour 45 minutes, Leipzig in about 1 hour 15 minutes, Frankfurt and Munich in about 4 hours each, and Cologne in about 4 hours 15 minutes. EuroCity trains run to Prague and Warsaw, and ICE and IC services to Amsterdam. The FEX Airport Express links the station with BER. Below ground, the U5 now connects directly to Unter den Linden and Alexanderplatz.
Europaplatz or Washingtonplatz?
The station has two main entrances, and knowing which one your chauffeur is using matters:
- Europaplatz (north): faces Invalidenstraße and the Europacity district, with the main taxi rank, trams and a short-stay zone.
- Washingtonplatz (south): faces the River Spree, the Reichstag and the Chancellery, with a second taxi rank and drop-off.
An underground car park sits beneath the station. Road access differs for each side, so a chauffeur waiting at Europaplatz cannot simply cross to Washingtonplatz in a minute.
Where the car can stop
Curbside pickup is standard. Pre-booked cars use the signposted short-stay and drop-off lanes on either side, or the car park, and never the taxi ranks. When you step off the train, call or text the chauffeur, who tells you which side and which bay.
For a meet on the concourse with a name board, add meet and greet when you book. Add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Delays and train tracking
Your train number is monitored all the way in. If the ICE from Munich is 40 minutes late, the chauffeur arrives 40 minutes later at no charge. After arrival, 15 minutes of waiting are included, then 15-minute blocks are charged.
Luggage
Two passengers with two suitcases fit a Standard Sedan. For three or more travellers, or bulky items such as instruments and camera cases for a film shoot, book a Standard Black SUV or a Sprinter Van. Child seats are free on request.

The government quarter and embassies
The station stands directly across the Spree from the Bundestag, the Chancellery and the ministries of the Regierungsviertel. Diplomatic and political visitors often need discreet, punctual transfers between the station, the embassies on Pariser Platz and in Tiergarten, and hotels on Unter den Linden. Conferences, trade fairs and events
Messe Berlin hosts large fairs, often including a tourism fair usually in March and an electronics fair usually in early September. The Olympiastadion, the Uber Arena and the Berlin Marathon (usually late September) also affect traffic. On such days, an hourly chauffeur with a three-hour minimum can be simpler than repeated transfers.

Is Hauptbahnhof the right Berlin station for you?
Berlin has several long-distance stations, and many ICE and IC trains call at more than one. Südkreuz, in the south, is often quicker for BER and for hotels in Schöneberg and Tempelhof. Gesundbrunnen, in the north, serves some trains to Hamburg and the Baltic coast. Spandau, in the west, is the first stop for trains from Hanover and Hamburg and suits guests staying near the Olympiastadion or in Potsdam. Ostbahnhof suits Friedrichshain and the Uber Arena. If your ticket lets you leave the train at any of these, tell us where you will get off; we can book the pickup at that station instead, and the drive to your hotel may be shorter.
