The LAX terminal horseshoe
LAX is laid out as a U-shaped loop of nine terminals around the central parking structures. Terminals 1 to 8 serve mainly domestic and some international flights, and the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT), with the West Gates behind it, handles most long-haul arrivals. Customs halls are in TBIT and in several of the numbered terminals.

The Central Terminal Area road is two-level: departures on the upper level and arrivals on the lower level. The Automated People Mover, built to connect the terminals with the Metro transit centre and the consolidated rental car facility, changes how people move once it is running, but pre-arranged pickups remain at the terminals.
Where is the pickup point for a pre-arranged car at LAX?
Taxis and app rides were moved to the LAX-it lot east of Terminal 1 in 2019. Licensed pre-arranged charter vehicles, which is what we send, are not part of LAX-it. Curbside pickup at the zone LAX designates for pre-arranged and charter vehicles on the lower arrivals level is our standard; the chauffeur texts you the island and column number once your bags are off the belt. Traffic control officers move cars on quickly, so wait until you are at the kerb before asking the chauffeur to pull in.
A name-board greeting inside baggage claim can be added as meet and greet. Add-ons are only available in selected locations; the booking engine will tell you if it is on offer for your terminal.
Customs and immigration timing at LAX
Tom Bradley processes the largest share of long-haul passengers on the West Coast, and afternoon waves from Asia and the Pacific can create long queues. A realistic allowance is 30 to 75 minutes from landing to the kerb, less with Global Entry or the CBP Mobile Passport Control app, and more if you have oversized items such as surfboards or film cases. The included 60 minutes starts at actual landing, and waiting after that runs in 15-minute blocks.
How long is the drive from LAX?
Los Angeles distances are measured in minutes, not miles. Typical weekday ranges from the terminal loop:
- Santa Monica and Venice: 25 to 50 minutes via Lincoln Boulevard or the 405 and 10.
- Beverly Hills and Century City: 30 to 60 minutes via La Cienega or the 405.
- Downtown Los Angeles: 30 to 75 minutes via the 105 and 110, or the 405 and 10.
- Hollywood and West Hollywood: 40 to 75 minutes.
- Burbank and the studio lots: 45 to 90 minutes.
- Malibu: 45 to 80 minutes along the Pacific Coast Highway.
- Irvine and Newport Beach: 50 to 90 minutes on the 405 south.
- Port of Los Angeles cruise terminal, San Pedro: 30 to 50 minutes.
The 405 between LAX and the Sepulveda Pass is one of the most congested roads in the country between 3 pm and 7 pm. A fixed fare means the slow crawl is not added to your bill.
Rail and bus alternatives from LAX
The LAX/Metro Transit Center, opened in 2025, connects the airport to the Metro C and K lines, and shuttle buses run between the terminals and the station until the people mover takes over. FlyAway buses run to Van Nuys and to Union Station. Times and fares are on LA Metro. Rail works well for a solo traveller headed to a station-adjacent hotel; most visitors to the Westside, the Hills or Orange County find a car faster. We also collect at Los Angeles Union Station.

Entertainment, crews and corporate travel
Studios, touring productions and agencies often move people through LAX on short notice. Departing LAX: timing your drop-off
For a flight out of LAX, book the pickup so you reach the upper departures level at least two hours before a domestic departure and three hours before a long-haul one. From Santa Monica that usually means leaving 60 to 75 minutes before you need to be at the kerb in the late afternoon; from Pasadena or Irvine, add another 30 minutes. The chauffeur drops you at your airline's door on the departures level, where stopping is limited to active loading. If you are flying from TBIT after a meeting downtown, an hourly booking lets the car wait while you finish and then run straight to the airport.
