The airfield and its FBO
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport sits about three miles northwest of downtown on Highway 82, at roughly 7,800 feet, with a single runway squeezed into the Roaring Fork Valley. Atlantic Aviation runs the fixed-base operation on the field, so private arrivals, hangar space and fuel are handled from one building next to the commercial terminal. The county has been planning a long-term airport redevelopment, so parking and access roads can shift during works; the FBO team always has the current layout.
Weather and terrain shape the schedule here more than at almost any US resort airport. Operating hours, night restrictions and aircraft size limits apply. Your flight department knows the rules; for ground transport, all that matters is that we track the real landing and not the plan filed in Van Nuys or Teterboro.
FBO-door pickup and planeside requests
Curbside at the FBO entrance is the standard pickup. The chauffeur waits by the door, the line crew moves your bags from the aircraft, and you are in the car within minutes of the engines stopping. If you want the car at the aircraft, ask for it when you book. Planeside access depends on the FBO's ramp procedures and on the aircraft operator agreeing, and both can say no on a busy winter day. Independence Pass (Highway 82 east) is closed for the winter season, usually from November to late May, so winter road trips to Denver go the long way through Glenwood Springs and I-70. Check CDOT before a long transfer.
Customs for international private flights
Aspen is not a normal port of entry for private aircraft arriving from abroad. International flights usually clear US Customs and Border Protection at an airport of entry first, then continue to ASE as a domestic leg. The operator files the arrival with CBP and handles crew and passenger documents. Once the aircraft is at Aspen, passports have already been dealt with, and the chauffeur simply meets you at the FBO. An Aspen weekend for four can mean eight ski bags, boot bags and a duffel each. Standard Black SUV and Executive Black SUV classes seat six with six bags, which in practice means four passengers and their skis when rear seats fold. For a family or a group with full gear, book two SUVs or a Sprinter Van (12 passengers, 12 small bags). Busy months at ASE
Private traffic peaks over the Christmas and New Year holidays, Presidents' Day weekend and spring break, then again in July and August with the music festival, the Aspen Ideas Festival and the Food & Wine Classic season. On peak days ramp space is tight and planeside requests are the first thing an FBO declines. Book early and keep the tail number current if the aircraft changes.
