SJU at a glance: terminals and who runs them
Luis Munoz Marin International is in Carolina, on the edge of Isla Verde, roughly 13 km east of Old San Juan. It is operated by Aerostar Airport Holdings under a long-term lease, and it is the main gateway to Puerto Rico. The passenger building is one long structure divided into lettered terminal areas, with airlines grouped by area; your boarding pass shows which one you use. Do not confuse SJU with Isla Grande (SIG), the small Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci airport next to the convention district, which handles commuter and private flights. If your ticket says SIG, tell us so the car goes to the right field.
Domestic or international? Why it changes your arrival
Puerto Rico is a US territory, so a flight from Miami, Orlando, Newark or Chicago is a domestic flight. There is no passport control on arrival, and you walk straight from the gate to baggage claim. That makes SJU arrivals from the mainland quick: 15 to 30 minutes from landing to the curb is common. Those flights include 30 minutes of waiting from the actual landing time.
Flights from the Dominican Republic, Europe, Latin America or Canada are international. Passengers are processed by US Customs and Border Protection in the arrivals area, which can add 30 to 60 minutes at busy times. Leaving Puerto Rico: agricultural inspection before check-in

Rail and public transport from the airport
The Tren Urbano metro runs between Bayamon and Santurce but does not reach the airport or Old San Juan, so it is rarely useful for arriving travellers. Public buses exist but are slow with luggage. Most visitors use the official tourist taxis, which charge zone fares, or a pre-booked car. The difference with a chauffeur is that the vehicle, driver and fare are settled before you board your flight.

Embarkation-day arrivals should land with a margin before the ship's cut-off, and it is worth booking the post-cruise ride back to SJU in the same reservation. Many flights from New York, Boston and Chicago land in San Juan in the late evening, and several mainland-bound departures leave before 07:00.
