How the Miami International terminal is laid out
MIA is a single horseshoe-shaped terminal divided into three sections, each with its own concourses and its own arrivals curb:

The Skytrain runs airside along Concourse D. Landside, the MIA Mover links the terminal to the Miami Intermodal Center, the rental car centre and Metrorail. Because the building is about a mile long end to end, the door you exit matters. Your flight number tells the chauffeur which section to go to.
Where the chauffeur picks you up at MIA
Standard service is curbside pickup at the zone MIA assigns to pre-arranged ground transportation on the lower arrivals level, outside the section where you land. How long does customs take at MIA?
Miami is the busiest gateway between the United States and Latin America, and afternoon and evening banks from South America, the Caribbean and Europe can overlap. Allow 30 to 75 minutes from landing to the kerb on a typical day, and up to 90 minutes on holiday weekends. US Customs and Border Protection halls operate in both the North Terminal and the Central and South terminals. Enrolled travellers can use Global Entry kiosks or the CBP Mobile Passport Control app. Your 60 free minutes begin at actual landing, and waiting after that runs in 15-minute blocks.
Drive times from MIA across Miami
Miami International sits about 8 miles west of downtown, between the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) and the Airport Expressway (SR 112). Typical ranges:
- Downtown Miami and Brickell: 15 to 35 minutes.
- PortMiami cruise terminals: 20 to 35 minutes.
- South Beach and Ocean Drive: 20 to 45 minutes over the MacArthur or Julia Tuttle causeway.
- Mid-Beach, Surfside and Bal Harbour: 30 to 55 minutes.
- Coral Gables: 15 to 25 minutes.
- Coconut Grove: 20 to 30 minutes.
- Key Biscayne: 25 to 45 minutes over the Rickenbacker Causeway.
- Fort Lauderdale and Las Olas: 35 to 60 minutes via I-95.
- Key West: 3 h 30 to 4 h 30 down the Overseas Highway.
SR 836 and SR 112 are all-electronic toll roads. Big events, such as Art Basel Miami Beach, usually in December, the Miami Open, usually in March, and the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, usually in May, add heavy traffic around the causeways and Hard Rock Stadium.
Rail and transit options from MIA
The MIA Mover takes you to the Miami Intermodal Center, where the Metrorail Orange Line runs to Government Center downtown and on to Brickell in about 15 to 25 minutes, and Tri-Rail heads north towards Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Schedules are on Tri-Rail and the Miami-Dade County transit pages. Rail does not reach Miami Beach, so for the beaches, Key Biscayne or a cruise with luggage, a car is usually the practical choice.

If you are flying in on embarkation day, choose a flight that lands by late morning and allow for customs if you are coming from abroad. Weather, hurricane season and summer storms
Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with the highest risk from August to October. When a storm threatens, airlines cancel flights and Miami-Dade can issue evacuation orders for the barrier islands, including Miami Beach. If your flight is cancelled, change or cancel the booking as early as possible; the standard cancellation terms apply. Outside storm season, afternoon thunderstorms in summer are short but heavy, and they briefly slow the causeways and the Dolphin Expressway.
Onward trips to Palm Beach, Naples and the Keys
MIA is the starting point for many longer drives. Boca Raton is typically 50 to 75 minutes up I-95, and Palm Beach 1 h 15 to 1 h 45; Palm Beach's own airport, renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport, is an alternative for the northern county. Naples is 2 to 2 h 30 across Alligator Alley on I-75, and Key West 3 h 30 to 4 h 30.
