Coming from the mainland or abroad: what changes at SJU?
Puerto Rico is a US territory, so a flight from the mainland United States is a domestic flight. There is no passport control and no customs on arrival, and US citizens can fly on a driver's licence or other accepted ID. Because it counts as domestic, the included waiting time is 30 minutes. International travellers, for example from Europe, Canada or Latin America, clear US Customs and Border Protection at SJU under the same rules as any US airport: an ESTA or a US visa is needed where applicable, and the included wait is 60 minutes.
One step surprises many visitors on the way home: before security for flights to the mainland, all baggage passes a US Department of Agriculture inspection to stop plant pests leaving the island. Some fresh fruits and plants are restricted; the USDA APHIS site lists what is allowed. Allow extra time for it, particularly on Sunday afternoons when many flights leave.
Luis Munoz Marin International: terminals and pickup
SJU is in Carolina, beside Isla Verde and about 13 km east of Old San Juan. Terminal A, used mainly by JetBlue, is the newer building; Terminal B, with concourses B, C and D, handles most other airlines and international arrivals. Your confirmation gives the terminal and the designated pickup area for pre-arranged transport, which is where standard curbside pickup takes place. The Old San Juan cruise piers
San Juan is one of the Caribbean's main cruise home ports, and the Port of San Juan cruise piers line the Old San Juan waterfront along the bay, a short walk from the old city's blue cobblestones. Some of the largest ships use the Pan American Pier on the Isla Grande side of the bay instead. On turnaround days, embarkation traffic backs up along the waterfront roads, so the chauffeur waits in the designated transport area for your pier and messages you the exact spot. Old San Juan's narrow streets are often closed or congested, and vehicle access to parts of the old city is restricted.
Passengers flying in on embarkation day should aim to land by late morning. Old San Juan is the walled colonial city with El Morro, the Castillo San Cristobal, La Fortaleza and Hotel El Convento. Condado is the beachfront hotel strip, home to the Condado Vanderbilt and La Concha. Isla Verde, next to the airport, has the Fairmont El San Juan and other beach hotels. Miramar and Isla Grande hold the Puerto Rico Convention Center and the Isla Grande airport. Santurce is the arts and restaurant district around La Placita. Driving in Puerto Rico: tolls, signs and traffic
Cars drive on the right, as on the mainland, but road signs mix units: distances are in kilometres and speed limits in miles per hour. The main toll roads are PR-22 (Jose de Diego) to the west, PR-52 (Luis A. Ferre) to the south towards Ponce, PR-66 to the east, and the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge between Isla Verde and Hato Rey; all use the AutoExpreso electronic system. Rush hour on Baldorioty de Castro Avenue (PR-26) between the airport and Condado is heavy on weekday mornings and evenings. Puerto Rico's economy includes a large pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing base, with plants spread across towns such as Barceloneta, Manati, Juncos, Humacao and Carolina. Weather, hurricanes and flight disruption
San Juan is warm all year, with a wetter season from roughly May to November. Afternoon downpours are short but heavy, and they slow traffic on the expressways and flood some low streets in Santurce and Isla Verde for an hour or two. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November; when a storm threatens, the airport and cruise lines change schedules, and flight tracking moves your pickup automatically when a flight is delayed. If your trip is cancelled because of a storm, update the booking as early as possible: the standard cancellation rule applies, so changes made more than 72 hours ahead are free.
Departing SJU: how early to leave
For flights to the mainland, allow time for the USDA inspection and security, and plan to be at SJU about two hours before departure, or two and a half hours on Sunday afternoons and holiday weekends. From Condado that means leaving roughly two hours 30 minutes ahead; from Dorado or Rio Grande, three hours. International departures need about three hours at the airport. Cruise passengers disembarking in the morning and flying out the same day should book flights after midday where possible.
