Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ)
PUJ is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean and is privately operated. Passengers use Terminal A or Terminal B, both built in an open-air style with thatched roofs. After immigration, baggage and a customs check, you walk out of the arrivals exit, where operators of pre-arranged transfers wait in the designated area. Your chauffeur follows the flight, messages you once you land and tells you where to find the car. A name-board meet and greet inside the arrivals area is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations. Expect people offering taxis and tours at the exit; you can ignore them and go to the meeting point you were sent.
Waiting included: 60 minutes after actual landing on international flights, 30 minutes on domestic flights, then 15-minute blocks. On peak Saturdays, when many charter flights land close together, immigration can take longer, and the flight-tracked timing absorbs that. The Coral Highway (Autovia del Coral) links PUJ with La Romana and the Autopista del Este to Santo Domingo, with toll plazas along the way. Inside the resort area, the Boulevard Turistico del Este is the main road; night driving is slower because of motorcycles and poorly lit stretches.
The e-Ticket and tourist card for 2026
Every traveller entering or leaving the Dominican Republic must complete the free e-Ticket, the combined immigration and customs form, on the official Direccion General de Migracion portal. You can fill it in before travel and it produces a QR code that officers scan on arrival; keep it on your phone or printed. Separately, the tourist card still applies to most visitors, but for air arrivals its cost is now included in the airfare, so there is nothing to buy at the airport. Visa rules vary by nationality; the official tourism site lists entry requirements. Avoid unofficial sites that charge a fee for the e-Ticket.
Where people stay
- Cap Cana: a gated development with Juanillo beach, the marina and the Punta Espada golf course, plus hotels such as Eden Roc and Sanctuary Cap Cana.
- Puntacana Resort: closest to the airport, with Tortuga Bay, the La Cana and Corales courses and Punta Cana Village.
- Bavaro and Los Corales: the long beach strip with most of the large all-inclusive resorts and the Downtown Punta Cana and Palma Real shopping areas.
- Macao and Uvero Alto: quieter beaches to the north, with a longer transfer.
Gated communities and resorts check vehicles at the gate. The chauffeur gives your booking name to security, so it helps to have your reservation reference ready.
Golf, marina and day trips
Punta Cana draws golfers to Punta Espada, Corales, La Cana and Iberostar Bavaro, and further south to the Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo. An hourly chauffeur or a round trip carries clubs in an SUV or van and waits for the round. Other popular days out are Isla Saona via the dock at Bayahibe, the Altos de Chavon village above the Chavon river near La Romana, and the Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo. Cruise ports near Punta Cana
Punta Cana itself has no large cruise terminal. The nearest is the Casa de Campo cruise terminal at La Romana, about 1 hour 10 minutes away, and ships also call at the Santo Domingo terminals. Departure day: resort to PUJ
Punta Cana's check-out and flight times bunch together on Saturdays and Sundays, so the airport can be busy. Leave Bavaro about 3 hours before an international flight, Cap Cana about 2 hours 45 minutes before, and Uvero Alto closer to 3 hours 30 minutes before. Before you go, check that the departure part of your e-Ticket is complete. PUJ also has a VIP lounge service and a private terminal for business aviation; if you fly privately, give us the tail number and handler, and our private aviation desk arranges the pickup. The fare for the return trip is fixed at booking, so you can book both directions at once and forget about taxis at the hotel door.
Weddings and incentive groups
Beach and cliff-top ceremonies at Cap Cana and the Bavaro resorts are common, and incentive groups often arrive on the same flights. - February: Dominican Carnival, with parades most Sundays and the main celebrations around Independence Day on 27 February.
- Spring: the Corales Puntacana Championship on the PGA Tour, usually in spring, at the Corales course.
- December to April: peak season, when resorts and roads are busiest.
- June to November: Atlantic hurricane season; check forecasts before travel.
