Las Americas International Airport (SDQ)
SDQ, officially Aeropuerto Internacional de Las Americas Jose Francisco Pena Gomez, sits on the coast east of the city, about 25-30 km from the Zona Colonial. It is operated by Aerodom and handles most of the capital's international flights. After immigration, baggage and customs, you exit to the arrivals area, where pre-arranged transfers are collected at the designated pickup area outside. Your chauffeur tracks the flight, sends a message on landing and names the spot. A meet and greet inside the terminal with a name board is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Waiting included: 60 minutes from actual landing for international flights, 30 minutes for domestic, then 15-minute blocks. The Autopista de Las Americas runs along the Caribbean shore and crosses the Ozama River on the Juan Bosch or Duarte bridges before reaching the centre. Evening peak traffic heading east, and rain, can double some of these times.
The e-Ticket and entry rules
Before arriving, each traveller completes the free e-Ticket on the Direccion General de Migracion portal. It is the combined immigration and customs form for both arrival and departure, and it produces a QR code for the officers at SDQ. The tourist card remains a requirement for most visitors, but for air travellers its cost is already in the airfare. Nationals who need a visa must obtain it in advance. Cruise passengers follow the procedure set by the ship and port.
Cruise terminals: Sans Souci and Don Diego
Santo Domingo has two cruise terminals on the Ozama River. Sans Souci sits on the east bank, facing the old city, and Don Diego sits on the west bank right beside the Zona Colonial. Districts, hotels and venues
- Zona Colonial: the first European city in the Americas and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990, with the Catedral Primada, the Alcazar de Colon, Calle El Conde and boutique hotels such as Billini Hotel and the Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando. Many streets are narrow or pedestrian, so drops may be a short walk from the door.
- Malecon: Avenida George Washington along the sea, with the large hotels and casinos.
- Gazcue: leafy streets between the old city and the Malecon, close to the National Palace and the Plaza de la Cultura.
- Piantini, Naco and Serralles: the business and embassy district, with offices, Blue Mall, Agora Mall and hotels such as the JW Marriott Santo Domingo and El Embajador on Avenida Sarasota.
Big events use the Estadio Quisqueya for baseball and concerts, and the Palacio de los Deportes. Government and diplomatic travellers often combine ministry meetings with embassy visits in this part of the city.
Traffic and driving in the capital
The Dominican Republic drives on the right. Santo Domingo is congested on the Avenida 27 de Febrero, Avenida John F. Kennedy and Avenida Winston Churchill at peak hours, and motorcycles weave through traffic at all times. The Santo Domingo Metro and cable car serve residents, but visitors with luggage or meeting schedules usually rely on a car. The chauffeur allows extra time for the bridges over the Ozama and for rain, which floods some underpasses briefly.
Getting to SDQ on departure day
Plan to leave Piantini or Naco about 3 hours before an international departure, and the Zona Colonial about 2 hours 45 minutes before. Friday afternoons and the evenings before public holidays are the slowest times on the Autopista de Las Americas. Complete the departure section of the e-Ticket before leaving the hotel, because it is checked at the airport. - Late July or August: the Merengue Festival, historically held along the Malecon and in the Zona Colonial.
