About the terminal
Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) is a single terminal building with a wave-shaped roof on the southern bank of the IJ, the waterway behind Centraal station. Ocean ships berth along its quay, and river cruise ships moor nearby along the IJ. The Mövenpick hotel and the Muziekgebouw concert hall stand next door.
The city of Amsterdam has decided to reduce and eventually relocate sea cruise calls away from the city centre, and the number of ships allowed at PTA has already been cut. Some lines now use the cruise terminal at IJmuiden on the North Sea coast, about 40 minutes from the centre, or Rotterdam, about an hour away. Check your cruise documents for the port, and book the same fixed-fare transfer to whichever terminal is listed.
Embarkation-day drop-off
The chauffeur approaches along the Piet Heinkade tram corridor and stops at the terminal's drop-off area, where luggage is handed to the line's porters. From canal-ring hotels allow 10-20 minutes; the city centre has narrow one-way streets, bridges and a 30 km/h speed limit on most roads, so short distances still take time. Arrive at the start of your check-in window; boarding usually closes two hours before departure.
Disembarkation: finding your car
After baggage claim, head outside to the ground transportation area in front of the terminal, where pre-arranged vehicles and taxis wait. The chauffeur is there with the car rather than inside the hall. Ask for the pickup 30-45 minutes after your disembarkation group is released. The first 15 minutes of waiting are included, and further waiting is charged in 15-minute blocks. A name-board welcome at the exit is available as meet and greet; add-ons are only available in selected locations.

Schiphol has one terminal building with several arrivals halls. The chauffeur tracks your flight, waits 60 minutes from the actual landing on international arrivals and 30 minutes on domestic ones, and meets you at the airport's designated pickup area. Schiphol security queues vary widely, so on disembarkation day allow at least three hours between the ship's arrival and a European departure and four for long-haul. Hotels for the nights around your cruise
The Mövenpick next to PTA makes embarkation a two-minute walk. On the canal ring, the Waldorf Astoria on the Herengracht, the Pulitzer and the Hotel de l'Europe are 10-20 minutes by car. Near the Museumplein, the Conservatorium puts you by the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, both of which sell timed tickets. Port-day private tours
An hourly chauffeur, minimum three hours, can reach the windmills of the Zaanse Schans in 25-30 minutes and the old fishing towns of Volendam and Marken in 25-35 minutes. In spring, the Keukenhof gardens, usually open from mid-March to mid-May, are 35-45 minutes south-west. Longer days go to Haarlem (25-30 minutes), The Hague and Delft (about an hour). Fare and cancellation
The fixed fare covers vehicle, chauffeur, taxes and waiting as above. If you need to cancel, doing so more than 72 hours before pickup costs nothing; at 72 hours or less it costs 10 %, at 48 hours or less 50 %, and at 24 hours or less or on a no-show 100 %. See rates. Driving realities in Amsterdam
The Netherlands drives on the right. Most streets inside the A10 ring have a 30 km/h limit, the canal ring has one-way systems, narrow bridges and very limited stopping space, and cyclists have priority at many crossings. Amsterdam also runs environmental zones that exclude older, higher-emission vehicles. The A10 ring road and the IJ tunnel link the terminal with Schiphol and the motorways. Allow a little more time than the distance suggests for any trip that starts or ends inside the canal ring, especially on weekday mornings and summer weekends.
